We will be in the DR late December - I am trying to find out if it is simply too early to go whale watching in the north. Anyone know anything about this? We are staying in Santo Domingo, but could make it north/east, if the wathcing would be good.

Sorry, too early. The whale watching excursions start around mid-January. Best month is February.

There are many humpback whales in Dominican waters in December, but they are concgregating on Silver Bank, a system of reefs and shallow water well offshore. Not much movement of the whales to the other hotspots, such as Samana Bay, until mid-January. Even then the excursions must go further out than they do in February and March.
