Goint to Punta Cana in February for 1st time. 2 years ago in Cancun a $1 US tip was considered sufficient for a bartender, $2 or $3 U.S. for a waiter, is this adequate in Punta Cana for an all inclusive?? Also, I have been told that there is no need to convert to pesos - U S $ are quite acceptable - is this true?

Agreed

Unless things have changed a great deal since last year, we received fantastic service with our U.S. $1's. We only changed money for shopping/bartering and as well, at the end of our stay, tipped certain staff who had gone above and beyond with service (10 - 20$).

Enjoy your trip!

Why

Why would you not tip the same amounts you tip in your home country? Good service is good service!

An excellent point - don't do the Cheap Charlie AI guest thing of thinking because you paid in advance you owe nothing to food service workers and maids who earn less per week than you are paying per day. I have seen this repeatedly in an AI resort in BC that has a cash menu - 6 people from France setting the record (excluding those who leave nothing) of RD$10 for dinner (US$0.20 at the time) with wine, food and dessert.

If a meal is worth say $20 leave 15%, e.g. $3 or RD$100. A US buck a drink is typical in North America though.

Bar & club-goers do this, but the standard when at a bar/club in the US is $1 dollar for every three drinks. People tend to overtip here in the States, but I've seen people turn into cheapasses pretty quick when they're at an AI.

Keep in mind that your bill includes a 10% tip. Also be aware that many restaurants, etc., require that cash tips be put into a pot so that they can be divided among all employees.

Great point Ken, when dining or drinking in the DR always ask up front if the tip is included in the bill. Also ask when ordering room service.

If you didn't tip for day to day service you are cheap.
