I am interested in coming to DR for several months around early summer. As I browse the boards I see many concerns about security, etc My legal question is -Is it possible for a US citizen to work high risk security in the DR? Carry firearms etc? Some of the English speaking expats seem to be in need of quality security. As a US Army Veteran this interests me. Would it be legally possible to set up a Dominican Co. With the proper licenses, etc to work in such a capacity? I know of many Army Rangers,Special Forces, etc Vets that are serious professionals and would like to operate on a contract basis. I do not mean apartment guards. But as Static location High threat security or VIP escorts. Thanks for all comments and suggestions.

Good questions. I'm sure there is a market "People that could use it and can afford it". (Don't know if they feel that they need it or not). Looking forward to the replies.

As far as I'm aware (99%), only citizens and residents can be licensed to carry fire arms. This means all your contractors would need to be residents to legally work and carry firearms here.

Saying this...

We have many security firms here that have employee's that are obviously not licensed, but come under the responsibility of the company.

I guess we are no closer to an answer :)

seems tricky

Yes I have noticed that! Hahaha I have seen many posts of paying Colonels for permits to expedite such matters. Posts of people as you say obviously not licensed, etc. Its just that my life experiences cause me to find some of the posts I read from people (who are obviously terrified) strange. The associates that I have arent Rambo types. Guys that are very normal looking. Some that don't even look "fit" guys 5'8 maybe 5'10 that just happen to be experts in small arms and close combatives. That type of person. Not big burly physical deterrents. The kind of guys that get specific threat information, neutralize the threat and drive on. No long debating, worrying and what ifs. Nothing illegal just proffesional solutions for problems.

I think you wil find any person needing "executive" protection bring their own bottle :)
I hear you Ready! I don't mean those jet setter types. I'm not talking about guys that follow their principals all over the world on their yachts, etc. All of my friends that are into that are in Iraq or Yemen! That's where the big bucks are and real bad guys. IEDs and RPG attacks aren't issues of concern in DR.I'm not talking about people that have those type of threats. Any threat in DR although it would be taken seriously is likely to be what we would consider "light work" and thus the price would be nothing like the type of protection that expats bring with them.

I doubt this is true at all. Certainly not John Wayne and the paras following them around.

Not much of a market (in my opinion) for what you are looking for...there are a few companies who have VIP protection options but the truly rich bring their own...I've even seen some Israelis pulling security before...

That's cool that you're a vet but the credentials of Airborne, SF etc. may not open many doors (BTW I'm a former Army officer too so don't think I'm being a jerk...just telling you the truth). A skilled Dominican with a 100% grasp on the language and more importantly culture will win out every time. They know how to play in their own backyard. If I was in need of a bodyguard I would want a Dominican. I know a few who are LT's in the Army assigned to VIP protection. They are well qualified, intelligent and very professional.

Just my opinion...

Appreciate the comments! No were not talkin bout the John wayne or Paras! I haven't heard the term Paras used in a while! Know you would have to be a Royal Subject saying that. Didn't mean to imply that the Dominicans are unprofessional at all.I don't know any of them to say a thing like that. And you're right being able to do static line jumps doesn't make a person an effective guard. What I meant to say was that I'm not talking about guys that work for 8/hr@ wackenhut you know? Thanks for your comment and have a "HOOOOOAH" Day

Setting up your business shouldnt be that difficult. It will take time getting your guys organized. Needed are residency and then gun permits. Permits come with the guns when purchased but there is a process here now that takes some time. Get an attorney to guide you through all this. Very reasonable in price. 800 to 1000 for residency and about 1000 bucks for decent handgun and license. Time is a factor and you need to have certain things in country when you apply such as 2 raised stamp birth certs and letters of good conduct from the local constabulary.

There may or may not be a market for your services. Don't know anyone that pays any serious money for security. When I say serious I mean more than 400 US dollars a month. All you read here are paying less.

I did some high profile personal protection many years ago. I was just an extra gun for friends and worked when they needed me. All of them were working or retired law enforcement. I was a special situation kind of guy and the only guy they called when they needed a dog or dogs for a gig.

Good luck in your endevors here in the country. There is at least one person reading here that will probably pm you who has experience and knowledge. Don't think he posts.

Escott
