I was thinking of something fun and different to do during the summer months.

I'm taking Spanish classes. I need the practice to use the proper verbs and nouns in the right places.

It would be a place to practice with the help of many of our Spanish speaking members. We could even throw in some Dominican Spanish to keep it DR related. Light hearted conversations, not too deep so that all newbies can keep up.

What do you all think? If we get enough people agreeing maybe Robert will give us a little spot of our own.

I like the idea, but like you said, we would need some Spanish speaking members to participate. Are you thinking of doing this in a chat room?

Anna my Spanish is limited too, but I have used some of those words whilst giving directions to taxi drivers in DR - they never had any problems understanding what I was saying. I get the impression that Dominicans would understand "spanish" spanish far more easily than Spaniards would understand "dominican" spanish.

BTW I think your idea is a good one, but I'm not sure that I would want to try and put my limited [and probably wrong] spanish down in writing for the whole world to see - could be a tad embarrassing ;)

Anna,

Es una buena idea. Cuenta conmigo. Ya sabes cualquier pregunta que tengas me avisas y con gusto te ayudar?. Espero que todo salga bien.

My suggestion is that you come up with the guidelines on how the forum is going to work, you may want to add it to the thread or as the thread progresses suggestions can be added. You are correct the topics should be light so posters are encouraged to participate. DR related of course.

May I suggest a separate section for questions as they relate to Spanish usage? I am willing to help with vocabulary, grammar questions, etc. whatever it takes but those types of questions should be kept separate from the discussions so that they do not stray off course.

Here is a suggested name for the forum:

?el rinc?n espa?ol?

Anna,

All the vocabulary is standard (imo) except for:

* la manzana *- that?s more common in Peninsular Spanish (used in Spain)

* la cuadra *- more common in Latin America.

I think it's a great idea!
I am limited with my Spanish but I get around it because some of it sounds like Portuguese.
Left and right are said the same as Portuguese lol!
This would be great practice for me!

Idea buena Anna! :classic:

I just want to add that we ( dominicans) use both words, una cuadra o una manzana, some use "esquinas" as well to indicate a block. Hope to help

PS: you can count on me for "El rinc?n espa?ol"

Is there anyway to type the accent marks from a standard english keyboard? I would like to be able to type "el rinc?n espa?ol" since "el rincon espanol" has no meaning.

I have a paper with all that.

Espera que lo busco

#1 make sure the "numbers lock" is on
#2 hold down the "alt" key

? = alt 160
? = 130
? = 161
? = 162
? = 163
? = 164
? = 165
? = 168
? = 173
? = 129

Doesn't work on laptops because you need the numbers pad on the right.
You will see the letter with accent once you release the alt key

Question, what would you need this " ? " in?

Rellosk,

You can just memorize the codes of letters that have an accent and punctuation:

?= alt 164
?= alt 162
?= alt 130
?= alt 161
?= alt 163
?= alt 160
?= alt 168
?= alt 173

Alt 129= ?

Anna,

That accent is for verbs that end in "guar" in certain tenses.

Words like "averiguar"

Example = "averig?e"

There are quite a few.... I have to go now. Later.

Actually, Anna, you can do this on most laptops -- I oughta know, because I live/work on laptops and have to constantly write in Spanish and Portuguese. Most laptops have a keypad function utilizing numbers indicated in a special color -- blue on my current HP, grey on my last Toshiba -- on letter and number keys, zero on the M, 1 on the J, 2 on the K, so forth (note: 7,8 & 9 are superimposed on the actual number keys). You hold down both the ALT and "Fn" key (usually on lower lefthand side, next to ALT) and then punch in the number codes on the indicated keys. For example, "?" is ALT+Fn punch M,K,L,7.

BTW, for anyone interested in the codes for letters used in Portuguese but not Spanish, they are:

? = 0234
? = 0244
? = 0245
? = 0224
? = 0227
? = 0231

Anna, I might be interested in participating. Not sure how often, but at least from time to time. Could be fun.

I think it is a fine idea. Question though: Do you novatos want to be corrected when you make mistakes? I think that would be a great help. But I don't want to offend anybody.
