You May Have Explained This Before,But Here Is The "RULE" That I Use.

About when to use "Ser",and "Estar".
"Ser" is a permanent condition....Yo "SOY" un Americano.Yo soy un hombre.

Where "Estar" is a temporary condition.Yo "estoy" en mi oficina.Los libros estan sobre la mesa.

Help me!

When you say you are american or canadian you don't have to put the Un do you because when you state your profession I thought they told me in college that you leave out the un una. and its just yo soy _______.

Good grammar point!

Mofi,

You are correct but that's a grammar rule often not followed by speakers. The only time "un" or "una" should be used is if you are describing something about the person. Of course this rule applies to the verb "ser" for nationality, professions and like descriptions.

Ejemplo:

Es profesor BUT es un buen profesor. The description (adjective) "buen" allows for the usage of "un".

Ejemplo:

Soy americano, colombiano, dominicano etc. (no usage of "un").

Anna & Xamaicano nice work!

Anna,

Just a few corrections:

# 6- est? / Reason: Not all water is cold. You are referring to something specific only (about that water).
# 20 ? es / Reason: It could be that you did not know the meaning of taca?o. You are describing a characteristic about the person. Taca?o means stingy.

----------------------

Xamaicano,

# 7 son/ Reason: Could be that you did not know the meaning of travieso. You are describing a characteristic about the children. Travieso means naughty.

------------------------

Some general rules about usage:

SER
1) Inherent qualities (description of people or things, profession etc.), possession, what something is made of, origin.

ESTAR
2) For temporary states/ conditions, when forming the progressive tenses (present and past ej. est?n hablando, estaban hablando), location of a person or thing and with adjectives to show change from the norm.

There are cases when both could apply, depending on the context.

'Esta muy gorda' - to describe someone who is not usually fat but has put on weight.

'Es muy gordo' - to describe someone who is always fat.

Is this right? Are there any others?

Also, an exception is 'muerto' where estar is used - despite death being a permanent state.

As I have said before, my spanish friends have told me that they say esta muerta due to religiuos beliefs that the person isn't really dead because there spirit isn't dead.

There are many

Chiri,

There are quiet a few adjectives that have different meanings if used with ser or estar. As well, there is a small percentage that varies by region. However, the list and usage is quite common across the board. Also there are some adjectives that are normally used with estar and not with ser (and vice versa). However, in everyday speech they are used interchangeably.

Here are some common examples of adjectives that can be used with ser or estar but with a change in meaning:

Listo ?
Aburrido-
Nervioso-
Interesado-
Despierto-
Callado-
