Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes is a title of the Virgin Mary, given to a certain statue that the Order of the Mercedarians sent to Hispaniola on Columbus' second voyage. There are a couple of versions of its early history, including that during a battle with the indigenous people under cacique Guarionex, the Virgin appeared over a cross that Columbus planted, and when the Indians knelt down columbus slaughtered them. Whatever be the true story ( the best book is by Mario Concepcion, called "Concepcion de la Vega") we set aside Sept. 24 to honor the God of Mercies, and his chosen vessel, the Mother of Jesus, under the title of Our Lady of Mercies.
