I've lived in L.A. for three years. I've met 2 Dominicans. I'm originally from NYC. If you live in L.A. or in the area, drop me an email at dheredia4@yahoo.com It's depressing that some people in California don't even know what Domincans are. At the drive thru at Taco bell the other day, this guy asked me what flag I was representing on a T-shirt meant. When I replied La Republica Dominicana, He said, and I quote " What's that."

I was born in raised in Los Angeles--Silverlake to be exact--right next to Echo Park by downtown. Predominantly mexicanos. I actually never met ONE dominican growing up there. However, the people do know what Dominicans are. I used to always get mistaken for that--well still am anyway. I think it's just the dominican community ain't all that visible. I have met a few cubans and puerto-ricans however.

Right Here

Over here in Inglewood and for about the past year I have been trying to contact fellow Dominicans in the Los Angeles area. Glad to hear from you.

I will contact you and we will get together to add to the (single digit) number of Dominicans in Los Angeles.

Standing in the Gap,

I live in San Diego, Ca, born in DR. I think it's funny too that no one knows la Republica Dominicana but yet here in San Diego most young Mexican dance to Merengue and Bachata at the clubs. usually if I speak spanish to a Mexican they are totally suprise and then they come to the conclusion that I must be from Puerto Rico. oh they one that kills me it's " habla muy bien el espa?ol" of course I do it's my first language. Anyway, here in San Diego there are a few Dominicans mostly because of the military.

One of my acquaintances in the DR has a brother in the US Navy that lives in San Diego. He's been there for ages already. If I can get his number, I'll try to pass it on to you.

"How did you learn Spanish?"(The same way I learned English), "You don't look Dominican"(How does a Dominican look?), "Where in Mexico is that?"(It's outside of Mexico,in the gulf! "Are you and Haiti the same country?"(No, I'm not a country yet) Those are some of my actual answers. Sometimes I just have to bite my tongue and answer in a civil manner.

I am dominican and live in NJ, but have been travelling to CA for over 7 years on business trips. In that time I have met two dominicans, both in the Bay area. One of them ironically enough is from a town about 21KM from my town and knew many people I knew...

While in the Bay area, I usually go to this spanish club downtown San Jose named "Club Miami". They play everything, including merengue and salsa, though no Bachata.

I have not found a nice spanish -caribbean- club in LA. If you know of any and/or want to hang out, let me know. I am planning to be in LA on Nov 14th.

Hey you guys, I sent a message to a couple of you. I'm not Dominican and please don't be mad at me for jumping on your site! But I'm desperate to find a Dominican hairdresser in the LA area!!! I've called everywhere and I read in an earlier post someone said to call the embassy. I will do so if you all yell at me and kick me out! Thanks for any leads you can give!! Have a good day!! J

There's an idea: A DOMINICAN SOCIAL CLUB- wouldn't it be nice if we could organize something like that in Los Angeles?

hello

dominicans of so california i have been here for a minute but i can totally relate with all your experiences. yet feel sooo mind boggled when i see some mexican or whoever dancing to merengue and bachata. lol my gosh yo there was a time when they thought u danced merengue by jumping up and down on each foot and spinning around/ haahahahhaa:laugh:  imagine that. lol but i know there is a Dominican Social and Cultural Center in Lawndale im not sure of the location. Your best bet would be also to check up with the Hollywood park Casino in FEB because they always use to have this dinner celebration for dominican independence but i dunno if its still going on but just check up/ also when the puerto rican parade thing comes rolling around in june you will find dominicans there thats like the only event to me where tons of them come out of the woodworks. it kinda sucks cuz we dont have a centralized community here like we have the Heightz or Brooklyn in NyC. But just keep an eye out most dominicans i have met live in West LA, Southeast ARea: bellflower, long beach, downey, south gate, lynwood, and Orange County i met a few also in Inland Empire like Ontario and Riverside area but still not enough to keep up with NY Numbers but regardless u meet one then u get exposed to a network.

Just a head's up to all Dominicans in LA, I am doing my best to get with the city council here in Inglewood about a Dominican day festival. So, if you are in LA (Wherever) call up city hall and inquire. It will assist with the permits and possible sites.

Also if you are on myspace hit me up at http://www.myspace.com/stoquito.

Te Veo
