For some reason I always thought it was carino like it is in Italian but apparantly cari?o in Spanish has a whole other meaning.

Translation from dictionary is mono. Doesn't sound very cute though ;)

Que lindo, linda, describing the child might work.
Precioso, a, might give off the same feeling ...
I think "chulo" is more Mexican for cute.

Mono is correct for Spain but it is not used in that sense in Dominican Spanish. Dominicans might say 'que gracioso/lindo/bello'.

You are not a native speaker, so don't try to get fancy, just say 'que gracioso' or even 'que graciosura' (even additing an inflection for cuteness and say que 'grachochura'...

Well, when I lived in the DR my twins were small and doing/saying cute things all the time, so I heard this alot from Dominicans (especially dominicanas) when they did or said such things:

?Ay, que lindo!

I remember hearing the same, when my Daughter was much younger. (How I long for those days...)

Que mono! is what Cubans say or used to say in Cuba. It's been a long time since I've heard any Cuban use that term, but that's how they say "cute" in Cuba. Que mono! In Mexico they may say Que chulo or Que chulada or something like itl, although I think I've heard some in Mexican tv use Que mono and que monada too.
