Dominican Republic's Sports Mecca, Cabarete, Site for 2005 International Beach Volleyball Open

Top-ranked teams from around the world compete this month at first annual tournament


CABARETE, Dominican Republic, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Known primarily for hosting some of the world's top windsurfing and kiteboarding competitions, Cabarete, located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, is expanding its portfolio of events. Next week, the town will host its first ever International Beach Volleyball Open which will be attended by top-ranked male volleyball teams from around the globe.

The new event, held August 12-15 at Bozo Beach, is planned and organized by FP Productions in collaboration with the Hotels and Restaurants Association of Sosua and Cabarete. It is an invite-only tournament featuring sixteen hand-picked teams from countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the United States. The teams will compete in a series of tournaments with the top four ranking teams awarded for their achievement.

Festivities kick off on August 12 with a welcome party and dinner held at the Azurro Hotel for invited guests. The tournament, which is free and open to the public, begins on Saturday and continues through Monday. Playing times Saturday and Sunday are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday. Cash prizes will be awarded, including US $2,500 for first place, US $1,800 for second, US $1,000 for third and US $700 for fourth. Still, beyond the financial incentive, teams are equally competing for the crown in the event, which is sure to gain prominent exposure in coming years.

Top companies are proudly sponsoring the unique event, such as Presidente Beer, Brugal Rum, Smirnoff, the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Sports. In addition, popular brands such as Red Bull, Isuzu, Pringles, V8 Splash, Head and Shoulders, Speed Stick and Colgate are sponsoring.

Nightly entertainment will wrap up the intense competition with deejays Jose Nunez and Alex Alicea from Sublimal Records in New York on Saturday followed by Los Amigos Invisibles, a Venzuelan Funk group and local deejays Aldo Dalessandor and Joshua on Sunday.
