Best Rum To Put In A Mamajuana Bottle?

Ok, this is the deal:

Bought a few mamajuana bottles for some of my friends on my last trip to the DR and I, for one, want to know what type of rum should be put in.

One of my friends put Bacardi rum in it and it tastes like schit.

Another friend put Cardenal Mendoza (how stupid of him) in it and it tastes like schit.

I put Barcelo in it and it tastes like schit also.

Are we doing something wrong of I got schit instead of a mamajuana bottle?.

Btw, I bought them at the duty free shop at the airport.

It is entirely possible that it tastes bad for other reasons.
We always use Brugal Carata Dorada for our Mamajuana.
Now, I can tell you that I wouldn't drink that rum, nor would any of our clients, yet, it seems to be the best one for making Mamajuana.

When using new ingredients, I always soak the wood and spices for three days in hot water. This will take the bitter taste out. After that, poor some red wine and honey in the bottle and fill her up with rum.

Sounds like a good idea. Only if I had Brugal Carta Dorada sold anywhere here in the "woods".

Brugal Carata Dorada = Cheap dark rum.
Maybe you can find something similar.

Miguel, you should use the Brugal Extra Viejo, IMHO. The rest is crap. The blancos go down better but I hear they give you a nasty hangover. My friend here in POP ( expat, NOT a sankie!) is still recovering from a Barcelo Blanco binge he had Sunday night on the malecon.

Also, is mamajuana the stuff that they call Dominican Viagra? Sorry if that's a stupid question everyone already knows the answer to but I'm not exactly a ron afficionado.

In my opinion, Mamajuana does not have the effect of a viagra pill. Many would like to think so. To some, any alcohol beverage would make them lose their sexual appetite. But to some, it would awaken it!. BIG TIME!!. Go figure!.

After 3 different rums, my fricking Mamajuana still tastes like Shi*!!

One more try and if if does not work, I am throwing the crap out the window!!.

Now some people are telling me that I should NOT put dark rum in it.

Are you drinking the stuff as soon as you mix it? You need to leave it for about 6 weeks for it to have taste. Well at least two weeks anyways.

I once mixed in a small bottle of red wine I didn't like and that improved the taste. ;)

Yes, I am letting it "sit" for a few weeks.

I think I got shi* instead of a Mamajuana.

Sour? Did you do the cheap wine for a week (before any rum is added) and then throw that out thingy?

The batch I made a week ago I didn't have any honey so I added what I had. Brown sugar and corn syrup. It's yummy only a week later.

I just keep adding the brown sugar till it tastes good. LOL Old Italian recipe. Keep adding till it tastes good. :laugh:

BTW

as long as you keep it full anyone know how long the bottle is good for. Years? Months?

I've been using mine for almost two years and it seems to get better and better.

Just drop one capfull of clorox but make sure you don't put 151, shake vigorusly and smoke around it.......DYNAMITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but if you do add 151 just tell you worst enemy to hold it for you.

I have tried just about everything that have been old to me by people that have been drinking Mamajuanas for years.

I will give it time and if it still tastes like crap, I would either put some PEE in it or throw it away.
