They are called Dominicans, but it's pronounced differently: Dom-NEE-kun as opposed to Do-MINI-kun. If that makes sense. ;) The name of the island is pronounced 'DomiNEEka' with much more of a stress on the middle syllable.

Most Dominicans in Republica Dominicana dont even know that there is a country called Dominican besides theirs.

Well theirs isn't called Dominican and Dominica isn't either so I guess neither do you.

I believe the proper terminology is:
People of the Dominican Republic are referred to as Dominicans.
People of Dominica are referred to as Dominiques.
