This is one of those things we request people bring when they come visit us in NY, along with the good aged Brugal and Queso de Hoja. We could never find this coffee in any form in NYC. We sub in Mama Inez since you can get that in cans anywhere. When we get SD from visitors its always the individual packets, pre-ground etc.

I've just had the best cup of coffee ever (blows away Jamacan Blue Mountain $40 per lb. by a mile). We found whole bean Cafe Santo Domingo at Fairway Market on 125st for $7 per lb. Happy Days.. ;-)

Whole bean Cafe Santo Domingo?!?!
I didn't even know it existed.. Am I missing something here? Is it sold in the DR as whole beans?
Sure, and it's a lot cheaper than $7 a pound.

The one that is sold in package sucks. Taste like dirt. I hear that it is mostly ground dried pigeon peas (Guandules) mixed in with a little coffee. I prefer Bustelo with sprinkle of nutmeg and done in a perculator (greca).

Can someone elaborate on the guandules mix in Santo Domingo coffee. Is it a myth.
