question

If "mar" means sea then what does "marea" mean?

There is a telenovela playing on TLN here in Toronto called "Contra viento y marea"

marea is tide (high tide) in the examples
The tele novela probably means 'against wind and wave' (they are obstacles)
you know like "hell and high water" :)

Sometimes vendors come around with "Dominican beach sushi", which is two or three kinds of raw seafood, served on a paper plate or a seashell with salsa. The squid is "lambi" and the octopus is "pulpo". It tastes great, but I wory about it because I don't know how to tell if the slices are fresh enough to not cause trouble. Any tips? I'll be back at the beach in a couple of weeks. Pedro Tercero

crustaceon confusion ?

Thanks, Chiri. I think I probably knew sometime in the past that lambi was conch, but I obviously forgot. Getting sloppy. I hadn't heard about the pharmaceutical properties of lambi, by the way. Pedro Tercero

Squid is "calamar". "Lamb?" is conch.

I've also heard it described as "viagra".

In Cocolandia beach, Palenque, Ban?, there's this dark fat guy, combing the beach, back and forth, selling his specialty, a plateful of chopped lambi topped with a hot creole sauce, prepared on sight, next to your table, which he calls, "arregla matrimonios".

Never heard it about lambi but always heard it about una sopa de caracol

I meant shellfish in general, according to the vendors who sell what Pedro Tercero called "Dominican beach sushi". :)

Hello!! It's been awhile! Here is a word that came to mind...

un chairlong
it's the typical long beach chair. Anglicism - pronounced shay-LON

The Spanish phonetic spelling would be something like chel?n - it comes from the French chaise longue, a word that has also been adopted by English speakers.

Yes chel?n is what I thought it was all the time (since I have studied French as well) but I've only seen it spelled chairlong, so maybe I was over-analyzing it. Then I asked a Dominican student at the UCE to spell it for me and chairlong is what they came up with too HAHAHAHAHA
