I haven't been to DR yet but having read many posts in this site I see this is a major issue.

The reality is that wherever there is poverty and little social support from the Government prostitution is rife. I've travelled a lot and the issue is common in countries such as Thailand, Brazil, Indonesia amongst many others.

The subject is complex but you can categorise the issue in a number of ways.

There are those women that do it because they need the income as the only way to support themselves. Under the circumstances I say good luck and respect them for their courage. There are other women who are forced (not just for financial needs) into prostitution and these are the ones that need protection.

There are those guys that need prostitutes because for whatever reason they are lonely or unable to get female company. These guys, in my book, are better off with a prostitute than raping someone.

Then there are those (and I have read a few posts on here) who do it because they have no respect for women. They sleep with these women as some form of ego trip, a form of patronising control. Not nice.

Prostitution works morally best in countries that are not poor. The vast majority of women there do this as a job and always have the choice of walking away. I hope one day DR will be in this position.

Believe it or not, we are better off than a few hundred years ago when poorer women had no rights at all and were 'taken' whether 'paid' or not.

I'm not justifying anything, just recognising that the world's oldest profession will never disappear.

Who are these guys? Let me know and I will PM them right now and tell them to stop.

What are you, 12 years old? I've read your post twice and I can't find any insight at all in it. Why don't you go out and do some research, the kind you can't do from behind a computer.

Get to know some real prostitutes, you'll feel sorry for their customers by the time you know what you are talking about.

i am not an expert in prostitutes or prostitution by any means.....but i do agree that it is a complex subject.

however i do take issue with some of your assumptions (perhaps already taken up by previous posters)......and with that said......i normally wouldn't post in a thread like this, but i find your statement, quoted above, a little annoying.
the reality for me is that even when a government provides an abundance of social support or even if poverty is not evident, prostitution can still be rife.

.....there now i've got that out, you can continue.......

Ay dios, what is the point of this thread? (prostitution is the oldest profession and will never disappear?)... and ????? :tired:

So much of what you are saying is so disturbing--for instance, "believe it or not, we are better off than a few hundred years ago when poorer women had no rights at all and were 'taken' whether 'paid' or not" ???? um, women are still "taken" whether paid or not in this day and age, and most often not a whole heck of a lot is done when their "rights" have been violated and ARE reported (in the DR and worldwide)... Let's be real, do you know how many cases of sexual assault are even reported??? ... Do you know ANYTHING about what you are talking about? How are we "better off" now?

Do you think that those women taken to other countries and made to work as a prostitutes have "rights?" How so...? Which "rights" do you refer to?

AND there is a serious problem with respect to the prostitution of minors...what right's do they have? How are they better off?

The point of the original post eludes me also.

How is prostitution a major issue for you Abujamin?
Did you accidentally end up with a katoey in Thailand?
Was her muchacho bigger than yours?:)

Prostitution is color blind

The only reason anyone resort to work that "trade" is $$$$, plain and simple, and it don't matter where they come from.

Great idea!

Give one of these "working" ladies $25 Grand, and they would spend it in an hour and drive right back to work in a Montero!
