The European Amateur Golf Challenge, with EUR2 million in prize money will be held in the Dominican Republic 23-30 October 2006. The prize money comes from the registration money of the first 500 participants. The event will be hosted at the Paradisus Palma Real, recently opened in the Punta Cana area. But golfers will play at both the Cocotal and the Punta Cana Golf courses.
The organizers are reaching out to the around 4.5 million amateur golfers in Europe. The event is organized by Golfmeplease Tournaments. The way the event works is that the winners of each of the two handicap divisions, 0-9 and 10-18, will get to keep EUR200,000 each. The runners-up will get EUR100,000 per person and then prizes are planned to go right down to the 103rd of the 500 golfers who enroll, on a first-come, first served basis. The cost of enrolling is EUR10,000. The organizers say that players that place up to the 70th position could recover the registration fee.
