I was not planning on getting a lawyer until this guy came up with a title so I could begin by showing my lawyer the title and decide if it was even worth going forward from there. I think it prudent to enter into any negotiations in the D.R. under the assumption that something is wrong.

How does the real estate foreclosure process work in the Dominican Republic. Does a forclosure have to go through the court system?

All foreclosures have to go through the court system. The procedure is cumbersome and time-consuming. The auction itself is held in court.
