Ok guys, now I am going to swallow my pride and "manhood" and admit that I was WRONG, with a capital W, when I was talking out of my axx saying that the World Baseball Classic, in time, was going to become "nothing more than a joke".

Was I wrong!!.

I still believe that MANY team will not allow SOME of their superstars to play on it and many contracts will be written with a clause not allowing certain players to participate, but even so, this thing (WBC) is getting more and more fan fare by the second!. It's well known that MANY MLB management are putting pressure to some of their player not to play BUT even if MANY big leaguers are not playing on the tournament, there are enough superstars willing to play and represent their countries.

There will be a time when those that decided not to play, will be begging to play in the years to come. How do I know that?, because:

When you have a player like Chipper Jones saying: "If anybody asks me, I'll say this has been the best experience of my life, bar none", people (ball players) WILL take notice.

I guess that, for a second, I forgot how much hispanics and other nationalities LOVE the game of beisbol. It's such a delight to see so many people having fun at the game.

My other delight is that these ball players are doing it for the love of the game since they are not been paid one cent. It's like going back to when you were a kid and all you wanted to do was to win just so you can brag about it.

I see myself following this thing all day long!. Worse, when watching one game, I am tivoing another and also flipping to ESPNews for updates. I am going insane!. It's getting so bad for me that when my g/f wanted to record "The Sopranos" and "Desperate Housewives" at the same time, all I was thinking was: "schit, how in hell am I going to watch the game, how can I Tivo the game now if 2 programs are being recorded at the same time, darn it?.

I still would love for the USA to win. If not, I am hoping for the DR. If not, then I would love Korea to win since they are playing great, great ball.

To me, this is better than the ALL-Stars Game, big time. To me, this is much better than the World Series (well, if my Yankees are not in it). To me, this is better than any playoffs (again, if my Yankees are not in it).

Man, was I wrong. What a moron I was. What was I thinking.

Gotta go now, have to go Tivo a game.

It's a great idea

This is baseball's version of futbol's World Cup, but a much smaller version of course.

Both the DR and the USA, as well as most of the countries playing in this series, do not follow futbol with the passion than the rest of the world does. The passion seen in Orlando and currently in Puerto Rico, magnify that 10x, and include countries like Brasil, Italy, England, France, Spain, Argentina and all of their constituents and you'd be amazed. It's completely crazy.

I hope this does catch on and becomes the rival to futbol. Maybe they could play the 1st 2 rounds after the World Series, and have the final round played during All-Star Week in the middle of the season, replacing the very stale All-Star game.

I agree, I couldn't find a live broadcast of last nights USA-Korea game. Maybe it was on ESPN 8 ("The Ocho") :)

As I said before, it's going to be a while before that ever happens. Remember, MLB is supporting the WBC. It will take a injury of a major player for anyone to even talk about contract exclusions.

At this point I'm not even sure of the legality (from MLB's standpoint) of having such an exclusion in the contract. It MAY be an issue to discuss in the next collective bargaining agreement.

This is Bud Selig's opportunity to sell this WBC thing to the world - and especially advertisers.

ESPN - never in its wildest dreams - imagined the Korea/USA game would mean something (10 EST?) being played in the deadest baseball town in America - SoCal - at the deadest time of the year.

Once the ratings are in, the public drum beating will get louder and just like everything else they've touched (Texas No Hold'em Poker) they'll drive it into the ground with a relentless shower of comercialism the likes of which haven't been seen since February 5th (Super Bowl).

Once the advertisers are on board they (Bud) can offer enticements for players to compete ($). Then you're looking at a prime time sporting event that will shift the sporting calendar any which way it wants.

Just follow the money.

ESPN is broadcasting the games in some crazy methods. They are broadcasting in ESPN, in ESPNDeportes and in ESPN2, at all crazy hours.

For instance:

Today's game between Japan and Mexico, ESPN says that the game will start at 7PM, they will broadcast the game on ESPNDeportes at 10:30PM and then on ESPN2(delayed) at 3:30 in the morning.

Rellosk, don't forget that even if it not written in the contract, a team's owner will do whatever it takes to protect his investment at any cost, even if the event has the support of MBL and Bud Selig. Let's not forget that Jorge Posada was not permitted to play for Puerto Rico. One way or another, the owners will always find a way, even if it's "behind the scenes".

Btw, RD vs Venezuela starts at 7PM(in 2 minutes) on ESPN2.

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

So far the WBC has been a very exciting event!!! :D

I appreciate the superstars such as Pujols, Ortiz, Ivan Rodriguez, Lee Seung Yup (5 homers so far in the tournament), Street, Jones, Jeter, and so many more for participating in this event.

Exciting is NOT the word!!.

As I said before, it's INSANE.

Let me give you and example:

On another thread, I was giving inning to inning score, FROM WORK!. Not only that I did not wanted to move from the TV, when it was close to 9pm, I told rellosk to take over (giving the inning scores) because I needed to drive home. I drove like a maniac (well, I DID lived in NY for 24 years) and when I got home, there was no taking no fricking tie off nor any pants and shirts, I went straight to the TV and put the game on. Then I turned the computer on to keep on giving the scaore. I was in such a hurry that even my daughter was a little afraid to be near me!. Oh boy!.

I haven't posted in some time, but I am so excited about the classic that I can't keep my mouth shut. I waited months for this and now I can't even believe that DR has a shot of winning, even if I have complete trust in our players, it's like a dream come true.

Potato Salad, I've read your post and followed the games since the beginning and I congratulate you wholeheartedly for Korea's amazing performance, it fills me with joy to watch underdogs shine this way. I hope we do meet in the finals, and there will be no losers because to me all the teams that get to go to San Diego are winners.

Last night on the 2nd half of the 9th inning with bases loaded, I was watching the game with my 13 yr old son, I asked him to turn off the TV after Miguel's error, not because I gave up, but because I was afraid for my heart (and his heart), I thought I would have a heart attack because of the tension (it's happened). I went to the window looking out on the streets waiting (better yet, hoping) for the "roar" of the people after that last out. I was not disappointed, I heard the whole street come alive with shouts of joy and I told my son turn it on and we started hugging each other.

Thank you for your kind words!!! :classic:

I was at the health club running while watching the game between the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. I almost fell down when I saw Tejada make the error in the 9th inning. LOL

But I was so happy and excited when the Dominican Republic finally won the game!!! :bunny:

I don't think you should put yourself down or feel badly about being off-base on the tournament. Who knew the success this tourney would bring? It's awesome, absolutely awesome. I think we all were very excited about it, but didn't think the rest of the world would be watching along with us with as much enthusiasm.

Does anyone know the rating share for of any of the games? Are they better or worse than expected?

I just NEVER thought that it was going to be this great or that I was going to be so excited about it.

Again, soon enough, players will be begging to be allowed to play on the event. I am more than sure that MOST of the ones that decided not to participate are already wishing that they are "there", playing with the others and having fun!.

I couldn't agree more. While you can understand if they have injuries or, in Vladi's case, personal circumstances not to play, I think the ones who chose not to play out of indifference are kicking themselves, especially the Dominicans, due to the success the team is having.

I couldn't agree more with Trina, what more can anyone ask for than to represent your country in such an important event? This is an opportunity of a life time. These players are playing with their heart, even if we lose, they will always be heroes in this country. Many more World Classics will come in the future (I hope) but none will be like this one, these are the pioneers and the ones who took the risk, like sports commentator Ricky Noboa said, "these are the ones who answered the call of their country"

An injury is a risk they take, and that's why it makes their participation more heroic, especially players such as derek Jeter, David Ortiz, Ivan Rodriguez, Carlos Beltran, Albert Pujols, etc. (there's also another player who's first name is Alex but I forgot his last name, it has been erased from every dominican's memory), their teams will not like it, but Bud Selig does not care, this WBC has been a resounding success and he will deal with the Steinbrenners of major league, after all, he's holding the pot by the handle and the WBC is his baby
