"Free information"

As we stated in one of our original messages, we are a private (That means not associated with schools or organizations) organization, attempting to chart changes in the Eco system of the Western Caribbean.

While working in the Southern Dominican Republic, we found unusually high levels of various bacteria in a certain area. As a public service, and warning to interested parties we posted that information on this board. Since then, we have been asked to "prove it", allusions to the veracity of our studies have been made and just plain ignorant messages have been received.

As such, we will not post data as we circle the Island West to East. If anyone wishes to see if we really "exist," we anticipate being in Sosua Dec 12-19.

It is unfortunate, as it appeared there were several persons interested in resolving your problem (It could be as simple as finding a broken main and repairing), but more that were interested in trying to assert their feeling of superiority.

If you wish this information, you may obtain it in the same manner as those who pay large sums of money for this critical information.

We have read your findings to Persia Alvarez, the technical director for the Caribbean area for Cristal, the British company hotels in the DR use to verify hygiene standards. We had hoped she had a recent study on the beach, but she didn't. Instead, she had more questions than we could answer regarding the methods used and the findings of your research. She was interested and because she is an expert on the matter would be one to contact to discuss your scientific findings and help locate the problem these suggest. She said there are two certified laboratories in the DR that could carry out this test -- Indotec and that at the Junta Agroempresarial. We suggest you also include complete information on your organization, the projects you work on in the DR and elsewhere, and how you can be contacted in the DR and the United States (addresses, telephone, fax and emails). Furthermore, our inquiries reveal that in the Dominican Republic, the authority in charge of coastal waters and beaches is the Instituto de Proteccion Ambiental (INPRA). This organization was recently in the news for commenting adversely on construction works of a RD$4,000 million port and tourism development in Samana. The project has been suspended for environmental impact reasons. The director is Zoila Gonzalez, Tel. 221-5140. INPRA is located at Edificios Gubernamentales, in front of the National Palace. We tried to contact her today, but because of the traffic jams in Santo Domingo (result of the ACP Summit), apparently she did not make it to her office this afternoon. If you need help in making contact, please let us know. I assure you that persons in the DR will take your research seriously, especially if it has been carried out with correct scientific methods. For the graduate students, it would be a worthwhile experience to discuss findings with expert local authorities.
