Anyone have any experiences being american and going through customs? I'm not looking forward to this..

Should my husband be carrying all the gifts? Is that safest since he is the Dominican Citizen??

Thanks! Jenny

Your husband is allowed duty free gifts for up to US$1,000, if he is a Dominican who has been abroad for at least six months.

I will be travelling to the Dominican Republic for the holidays. I am a United States citizen and plan on bringing gifts for my friends there. What should I expect when I am passing through customs in Santo Domingo Airport? Will I be subjected to pay duties on these gifts? Thank you very much.

Customs inspectors are generally very flexible at Christmas time, especially since the generality is bringing in gifts for friends and relatives, regardless of them being Dominican or not. If you are bringing in appliances, though, you may be taxed. I wouldn't worry about the duties, though. In most cases, they will not be high.
