Maybe some of our DR Illuminati could inform a simple Onion and Carrot, what is the scope of baseball wagering in the DR? How much is the pot?

How big is Juancito Sprts, what is their depth?

Is it possible to place 10,000 dollar bets or is there a limit? 1,000 dollar bets.

I spoke to a friend who has won the last 21 of 30 games ( a parley). Of course his wagers are small, a couple of hundred at most. He has capacity for more but past performance is not indicative of future results. The disclaimer seen in all trading brochures, he lives by.

He told me about large bets being placed in El Naco, Santiago, San Fran de Macoris. Don't know much about this so please let me know.

Maybe someone familiar with sports betting in the DR can inform me here, thanx.

They'll take the bet but I wonder if they'll pay. I was told that alot of bancas are getting held up. One banca took a 1,070,000 peso hit, nearly putting them under. So I was told. Other bancas I've heard of large payouts where they set up the winner. He gets heldup as an inside job.

Thats besides the fact. Hope someone can answer the OP. What is the size of sports betting in the DR. I think in the US or the world its something like 20 billion dollars.

First, even without hard figures, you have to believe that the Sports betting business in the DR is enormous just by the numbers of outlets. Every little town has multiple bancas. A city like Puerto Plata must have at least 100.

As far a a large bet putting them under, it is highly unlikely. Bookmakers strive to have even action on both sides of a bet and profit by the vig. They usually can achieve this by adjustment of the betting line and atracting bets on the other side. When they can't achieve this they lower their liability by laying off the bets to other bookmakers. I have been very sucessful betting in the DR against teams that feature Dominican athletes. For example, when Pedro pitches, the Dominican bookmakers are inundated with bets on the Mets. To lower their exposure the bookmakers create an overlay (abrormally increased betting line) for the opposing team.

Concerning the bancas being robbed. Robbing a banca is the equivalent to robbing an Gambino numbers runner in NY. The thief had better hope the police catch him before the banca owners.

Juancito will not take a bet that large. But I guarantee you will be paid by him. Five Star will take 10,000 on a game and he is also Gold as far as paying. Ask for Jimmy at Five Star in the Capital if you want a large wager.

The exact name of that place is 5 Stars, right and could you tell me where in Santiago its located. That is much closer to where I am situated. I just don't like the stench and filth of the capital. It feels like a sewer full of rats.

One last thing, a friend of mine told me they get their lines from Vegas. That being the case how do they (DR outlets) differ from Vegas? You mentioned that dominicans usually bet heavily on teams featuring dominican athletes. That this skews the payoffs. I am confused by this. If they mimic Vegas, how can the payoffs vary?

Best regards,

O&C

Everyone gets their lines from Vegas - at least as a starting point.

Pedro Martinez (for instance) draws a significant amount of attention at bancas. Because so much money comes in on him, the banca has to avoid getting their eyes gouged out by one bet, so they make you pay more for your bet.

In other words, Pedro (The Mets) may open in Vegas as a favorite at -200 (you're getting less than a 0.25 on the dollar - in a win). The inverse might be +170, +180, so you'll get far greater value as the odds are stacked heavily against you.

Many will parlay Pedro's games with bets on his total k's, k's by the inning, and his team winning. In addition they may bet 1/2 games (4.5 innings), total runs scored, and perhaps total runs, hits and RBI's by a particular player. Pretty absurd if you're unfamiliar.

They (bettors) consider Pedro a lock, so they parlay his bets with others, increasing the total payoff (as well as decreasing their odds of winning). A parlay consists of multiple bets, (original odds are kept) but the payoff increases exponentially as the odds of hitting 3 out of 3, or 5 out of 5 bets are really high.

As per bet size, I would strongly discourage anything over a couple hundred dollars at any "banca", but I wouldn't hesitate at 5-star, or any of the reputable casinos.

However, any large bets over a few hundred dollars are going to get the wheels turning and you'll become a mark. You'd be wise not to travel alone, and to make your protection abundantly obvious to ward off trouble. Forget the smiley faces, that's no joke.

As I've said many times - and has been proven 4 x this month alone - betting against Pedro (in the DR anyway) is the way to go. No matter what, they all bet on him, driving the number way up and that alone is enough reason to bet on the value of getting 40-60 extra points on your line.

The Mets have lost all but one game in May that he started. It happens with him often. The reason? I think it's because everyone who faces him realize their facing greatness and they want to measure up against him - i.e. they bring their best game, and they really want to beat him.

Still, if you need to gamble, I'd recommend a spade, a packet of seeds and some fertile earth. That's how Pedro gambles I hear.

Although, he's pitching against this year's (more than likely) Cy Young award winner on Wednesday. Take the value!

Can you explain this a bit further? the -200, +170, +180.

I have been following a childhood friend who has in the last 33 parleys has won 22. I was shocked. What got him was his money management which has caused him to give it all back. So we're going into it together by pooling money together. He'll call the bets and I'll place the bets (for security maybe have someone else place it). I'll also take care of the money management since I do know that portion quite extensively. I use that daily in trading futures.

It means that if you bet a favorite that is -200, You must bet $2.00 to win $1.00. To bet an underdog at +170, you win $1.70 for each $1.00 bet. Same for +180, win $1.80 for each $1.00 bet.
