landing at La Guardia OR JFK and "hopping" a bus (geraldo transport??) for going to Massachusetts????

Where in Massachusetts are you going? There are express buses and trains from NY to Mass. Ask your relatives what would be your best stopping point closest to them.
The reason is most likely a very cheap airfare. If the ultimate destination is within the greater Boston area there is an advantage of buses that run to/from NYC - Boston with fares as cheap is $15. There are also transport companies that offer a minivan door to door service NYC to the Boston area for as low as $25-30. The major disadvantage of the surface transport is the additional time involved 4-6 hours to Boston from NYC and the cost of transport from airport to NYC to make connection to Boston.
