Hi I am thinking of buying some property in the DR, I am not sure where yet, but I have my heart set on Puerto Plata, or somewhere along the Northern coast. In general do you think it is better to buy property and then build a home, or to buy property with something already built. Please take into consideration, the cost, time to build a home etc. I am in no rush so if it taked a while to build a home that's ok.

Also, is it safe to live in Canada, and rent property you own in the Dominican Republic to others? Others can be tourists or citizens. Has anyone had any experiences doing this?

Done that, been there.

We bought land in April of 2005, signed a contract in Sept. 2005 and the house should be done this summer. It takes a long time to build compared to what we are used to in New England. If patient, however, the quality is excellent and affordable with the right people.
