Fred and Mary were being held at a mental institution but were free to wander it's grounds at will. One morning, without warning, Mary (who could not swim) leaped into the garden pond and immediately started struggling to keep her head above the water. Without hesitation, Fred jumped in after her and pulled her out. News of Fred's brave actions soon reached the manager of the institution and he called Fred to his office:
"Fred, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that your lack of hesitation in pulling Mary out of the pond illustrates to me that you are not mad. You are free to leave. The bad news is that unfortunately Mary is no longer alive. We found her hanging by her dressing-gown cord in her room...Fred, I am sorry, but Mary hung herself."

Fred replied: "She didn't hang herself...I hung her there to dry!"
