Someone told us it was faster and less mountainous to drive from Santiago to Las Terrenas than from Puerto Plata. Is this true? How long will it take to drive from Santiago to Las Terrenas?

The drive from Santiago to Las Terrenas is about 3:15 or so.
If you are starting from Santiago, that is the way to go:
Santiago-> San Francisco de macorís_>Nagua->Sanchez->Las Terrenas.

To go up to the north coast and then around to Las Terrenas might be counter productive..It's 2 1/2 hours from Santiago to Playa Grande, and i don't think you can get from Playa Grande to las terrenas in 45 minutes...

However, if you are starting from Puerto Plata:The drive along the coast is nice, but i hear that the road is not so hot.

1. No, it's not true.
The hilly part comes after you turn off to LT in Sanchez (to the left just after the Texaco petrol station), about 10 miles to go from there.
That you could only avoid taking a long detour via Samaná Town and the El Limon road in order to reach LT from the East.
2. about three hours

Both rides would be approx. 3 1/2 hours, driving lesurely.
Both are flat until you get to Sanchez, where you turn off to go to Las Terenas.
If your starting point is Santiago, then there would be no sense going via Puerto Plata, as it would add on an extra hour or so.
The North coast ride is a bit prettier of course, but neither ride is boring.
