As of midnight the cops were all over the place shutting down the bars. "ALL THE BARS" Discos and all. Big problems on the horizon. Fights with the hookers in Merengue bar etc. Any other places in the DR have the same situation?

That answers a lot of questions that were asked in the thread that first announced the new laws.
I felt that they (the government) were serious about this, as Leonel means business, when it comes to taking a bite out of crime, but how it was all going to go down, and when, was anybody's guess.
Now we know.
I wonder what the discos will do.
Will they fight & resist, or just adapt to a new schedule?
Let's hope that the law gets implemented with a minimum of resistance.
I'd hate to see a huelga right in Sosua.

Re Rocky
There is nobody in the Discos in Sosua before midnight. They will just go bankrupt.

I'll guess many people will start to cancel their reservations as soon as they hear about this.

Or they will fight the new law, or they will try to attract people at an earlier hour, or they might just open on weekends.
It's anybody's guess.

The tourists who love the disco scene will not be pleased, but if this is to be the status quo, I do not think it will affect tourism in a negative fashion, it may even boost it a bit, if Leonel's plan to reduce crime, actually works.

no booze after midnight>? that blows...

cancelling the reservations is not an option.

I arrive in 7 days, and the way i see it, either I'll sober up earlier the next day, or we can just move the party to our villa...

.. anybody know where i can get a few kegs, >?

i think this is just temporary. since the law just came into effect they have to enforce it. give it a few more weeks for the cops and officials to start getting bribed. i suspect this will be like many other laws in DR that start off strong and just end up in the garbage.

Most tourists never go to discos... I don't see it as a problem for tourists....

Disoc & bar owners will get ****ed off, but regular citizens are concerned about trying to do something to minimize (at least a bit...) rising crime...

It's completely rediculous and will most likely have a lifespan similar to the "fuel saving measures" where you couldn't buy fuel at nights or on weekends.

The government just wants to look like they are doing something and maybe work in a little payback for all the complaining people have been doing about crime and corruption. Kinda like "stop whining kids, or we'll take your beer away!"

It's naiveté on a grand scale to think closing bars early will stop crime. If anything it will increase crime because people who are gainfully employed now will no longer have an income. It definitely won't stop people from getting drunk. And no doubt this will affect tourism. I know you people who deservedly praise the country’s beauty believe people will come solely for that, however, a good deal of tourist come to party. They are on vacation after all. Look want you have here, no liquor in the resort casinos or discos at a relatively early point in the evening. Many of the folks who spend the most money at resorts will look to other countries for their fun. I see a lot of lost bookings if this idiocy continues and even more people thrust on to the street to make do without a job. A much better solution would be to clean up the police departments and for the government to set an example by prosecuting high profile criminals. We know though that will never happen. In that country only the poor are made to suffer.

I think Leonel will stick this one out, the problem I see is the quality level of enforcement and corruptability of the Police. Do you guys remember when they set out to clean Boca Chica and started shutting down all those masajes and bars and keeping them closed. I think Leonel is serious about quality of life issues.

Like every Dominican government, the PLD is very serious about quality of life. Their own lives.

Why would it not?

I mean all-in resort, their bars and disco's, I think it applies to bars and disco's in towns, but most tourists go to AI resorts. Buit I might be wrong in this.

Boca Chica (at night) is still a ghost town compared to the what is was before the January 2005 shut-down.
