I know this has nothing to do with Dominican Travel but while the DR1 office is closed down maybe it won't get censored so fast! I appreciate the kind thoughts from our Canadian cousins and just wanted to share.

My America has been great, is great and maybe great into the future.

I have serious doubt that the times that forged good americans will once again teach the future generations how to be great. Selfishness and greed can destroy the higher values needed to be great. Courage, generosity and selflessness are fading. I can only give what I can and hope.

What a lovely message. Perhaps you don't realize, however,

that the television broadcaster being quoted here has been dead

for probably 10 years now!!!!!!!

No, I did not know this as the letter (e-mail) was sent to me by a Canadian friend who did not tell me the originator was deceased or that his remarks were over ten years old......HOWEVER, I still appreciate the comments from the kind gentleman who made them and his words are just as true today as when they were first spoken.Thank you for putting it all in historical perspective. I am still proud to be an American and I am still proud to be a neighbor of Canada! Happy New Year!

I would also like to say that as I have travelled as well as lived all over the world my international experience has widened my horizons immensely (my spelling isn't great though because english is my third language so bear with me please...)

What I have found is that the Old World I come from (ITALY) has forgotten that if it had not been for the wonderful Americans after WW 1 many of us might not be here today. So many Europeans enjoy despising Americans - even though deep down they probably envy their success in the World.

I am very fortunate to live in Toronto now where I live among people from all over the world. Every possible culture lives here and IT WORKS too (most of the time).

In my proximity to America I have had the chance to travel there often with work and pleasure and I have discovered Americans to be so wonderfully open, friendly, helpful and full of warmth. The world owes much to America and those who live in envy miss out the most wonderful opportunity for friendship and knowledge.

Here's a smile for you from accross the border!

I had sort of promised myself to stay away from this one. However, though I think Americans have a lot to enrich the rest of the world with, so does the rest of the World!

In any country you will find people who are proud of where they come from, and for good reasons. In my mind no country is better than the other - there will always be something good and something equally bad to be found. For every good thing I will be able to quote something bad...and the other way round.

So let's try and forget this rather competitive issue and just concentrate on being good - as the people we are, no matter where we are from. We can always learn something from others, and they can always teach us something in return.

I wish you all a happy New Year out there, no matter where you are all from.

Regards, Susanne

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT MADE AMERICA GREAT!

The New Colossus Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" EMMA LAZARUS

THIS IS THE INSCRIPTION ON THE BASE OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY! We took the "tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to be free" and gave them a chance. It was on their backs and by their blood, sweat and tears that America was built and is what it is today. We took the cast offs, the down trodden and the "misfits" from other nations and THEY forged one of the greatest nations in the world today. Our greatness comes from our diversity and our ability to recognize the wealth in diversity. We are not a nation of racial or ethnic or religious purity. We are the rainbow!

Re: CIA

America might be a nice place to live but we have to keep in mind how they are using third countries (including of course the Dominican Reopublic) to achieve their goals. Nothing will stop an american company to take advantage of others sovereign nationa. The United Fruit Company is a great example. The american people as such might be all right and quite nice at time but god what their government and the capitalism is doing is quite a disaster. Quite frankly, I am proud not to be an american when I see what is going on in Afghanistan, in Erythrea and in Congo where the guerilla is supported by the USA. What do you think ? Are you still proud americans ??? Have you already forgot Vietnam ?

Re: CIA

Fidel! You are probably absolutely correct. Just HOW are we "using" developing countries (including the Dominican Republic)to achieve our goals? I am not in that circle......just what are our GOALS anyway so I can help achieve them. And just how does a "company" take over a sovereign nation? Of course, if the company you speak of is Microsoft, Bill Gates just might BUY the sovereign nation and pay cash. (What country is United Fruit taking over? If we move there are we still ex patriates?) Yes, the American people can be quite nice but frankly, I actually know some that are not too desirable and would definitely never have them as trusted friends. And the government, dear god, but we agree, the Republicans have ruined everything along with Bill Clinton. I mean really, you don't believe unemployment is down do you? And capitalism, what a joke! I liked it better when I was in the service (USAF)and the socialist/communistic type system there. I used to see 30 patients on sick call every morning and my colleague only saw two, saying he could not practice quality medicine seeing any more than that in a 4 hour period. Yet, we were paid the exact same wage. That is real equality! I wonder if he survived in that capitalistic system called free enterprise where he had to compete with fellow physicians for patients and money by being efficient and at the same time productive. No, Fidel, I have not forgotten Vietnam. I think of it daily and some times in my nightmares...I was there. Were you? But I am reminded of what my old professor said one time. He said, "100 years from now they will laugh at us for operating on patients with cancer." And when I asked how we (if we happen to be around)should reply, he said, "it seemed like the right thing to do at the time!" Retrospective review is always easier than seeing the future. No one said America was Utopia. I have been to 90 countries and none have the freedoms and opportunities the citizens of the USA have. The American system and way of Life is a good one until a better one comes along. Am I still proud to be an American? YOU BETCHA! ECH
