Saludos!
I just returned from one of my best vacations in my 17 years of traveling to the Dominican Republic.
My images of Barahona, Playas Quemaito, San Rafael, Paraiso, Los Patos, Cabo Rojo, and the super gorgeous Bahia de las Aguilas have been posted here on DR1 in the media gallery section under Paul Gerace http://dr1.com/media/cgi-bin/media.cgi?direct=Gerace&img=0
I also got to spend time in Bahoruco and had an opportunity to visit and photograph the world's only larimar mines.
I will post a trip report within the next few days.
Gracias.

Outstanding photos..Good job on the coastal shots...Now everyone can see what I enjoy as a resident of that area..This area is unknown due to lack of tourism...Cabo Rojo and Bahia de las Aguilas are truly Gems of the DR..You are one of the few to take the time to go there...Thanks for sharing those great pics and will be looking to read your trip report....

I spent a few days in the region in June, and will definately be returning. I have a lot of pics, but after seeing those, there is no way I'm gunna embarrass myself by posting them! You are indeed an artist with a camera Paul!

Thanks much Zak023 and sweetdbt. Zak023, as a resident of that area would you know who would be interested in using my images to promote tourism to that part of the country? Is there a Barahona Tourism Association or something like that?

That area has benn a topic of tourism for 20 years now and will be for the next 20 years....This area has been discussed before and everybody knows what the problems are with that area..

1. Water supply not enough for big hotels..
2.Airport in Barahona now a military base
3.No body wants to see that area disturbed or just not interested.
4. Entry point for drugs..Everyplace that has a beach along rt#44.

Thanks for the great promo Paul !!!

PM or email me about possible use of your photo's.

Fortunately, there is much more happening in the area than some might think.

1: No water : Someone must not live where the 36"-48" aquaduct construction has not been a traffic hassle for the last year. We finally got the road through the middle of Cabral paved they tore up last year when the Canadian company laid the now completed E-W line in record time. N-S line is progressing along the Barahona - SD road and can be noted by all who pass. These lines will provide all the water Barahona will need for local consumption and for future growth. This will free up the major Rio San Rafael aquaduct line to Barahona for use in developing the Larimar Coast southward to Enriquillo.

2: Airport is Military Base: Now I know the old airport is in the middle of the Army base. And this might be a valid point if not for the Big New Airport, opened by the President in his first term, which is still out there in the boonies and where my friends land their planes. We do have to have the lights turned on for them, however, since American West quit flying in from San Juan on a regular basis. The only Military I know of at this airport is the attachment there to make sure no one uses if for " illegal " purposes. Also, I would think they might be there to look after Sr. Leon Jiemez Lear when he is in residence at his villa near Polo.

3: First part has definite possiblilities, second part a little short sighted without knowing the players.

4: This is a rough generalization to give to just one area when one lives on an ISLAND. If this is the case then, EVERY ROAD ALONG THE COAST OF THE REPUBLICA DOMINICANA HAVING A BEACH IS AN ENTRY PLACE FOR DRUGS. After three good thoughts, think we might have been reaching for just one more on this one.

And here I said there would be no more Observations from the Frontier this go around.

Thanks again, Paul, for the great pics. Have a LCI Group project that might find use for them so drop me a line.

Hi MommC--yes, the info you sent me was very helpful-I meant to thank you as soon as I returned but your info was on my computer at work. You were right, I would say that I would have needed at least 2 weeks to fully explore and photograph all that the area had to offer. I was just there for 8 days.

Hi Curlyq-Grrrrrracias!

Not to make any waves here..BUTTTTT...You are in Cabral .......I go there as much as you come to Paraiso/Los Cocos area..That water line you speak of will have nothing to do with us...They will have to BLAST through 70 Km of rock to make that work in the extreme SW..I saw the excavation work and I am not convinced this is for our benefit..Also those choppers are comming out of Barahona Airport..I was in the casino recently and saw them fly right over the beach heading south ..Also saw C130 aircraft taking off from the base around 6 PM...If you live in Cabral you would not see this because you are 15 Km to the west of this Airport/Base..The US military convoys would not have been visible to you because it was a #44 deal...Cabral is on #46..Correct me if I am wrong and by no means Do I want to argue with you...BUT!! The main problem with the drugs entering the country is in the Mid-Exterme SW..Not just any road along a beach in the DR..If you live in Cabral you know this to be True...PM me...

I have never been to Cabral for the Carneval...I was in Santo Doming..If you want good photos like the ones you posted last week [and you are a good photographer]you need to be on the Malecon in Santo Domingo...If you have been comming here 17 years than you would know more than I would about the RD and it's customs...But I will make a point to check it out this up-comming Feb..2007...It is only 1 hour from me instead of 4 hours to SD..
