Can anyone recommend a good English speaking lawyer in Santiago. An old friend of mine has been held in jail in Santiago for 4 months now on a pretty minor offence. He has never been to the Fiscal and has not seen a lawyer yet - pressure of work, summer vacation , unkept appointments etc- ie the family do not have much money! Does anyone know how long Dominican law allows for people to be held without charge,trial,or sentence?

Theoretically, 48 hours.
Call the US Consular Agent in Puerto Plata. This is his job!!
His name is Bill Kirkman. 809 586 8015, 8017, 8023.
IF it is a drug offense, the chances are the guy is well screwed...

However, the new Penal Code proceedures call for speedy arrainments and trials. Something else is a work here.

English speaking lawyer in Santiago

He is Dominican, I have known him for 10 years and he is a nice guy, thats why I cant understand whats going on. Thanks for your info guys. I am English, he is not my boyfriend or a sankey just a good mate. I dont want to call a Spanish only speaking lawyer as I need to understand exactly what I am being told. I dont trust my Spanish enough for that.

I guessed as much, so you can forget getting consular help.
There are so many factors.
Good friend or not, it depends on what he did.
It may be that the only real option is to try to buy his freedom.

<as I promised>

Dr. Rafael A. Escotto
Av, Francia No. 21 Plaza Girasol, 2do. Nivel
Modulo 2, Santiago, Dom. Rep.

If he can't help (I know he does Immigration, don't know what else he does), he probably knows someone who can.
