Hi all,

I booked a honeymoon to the Domican in September of last year (2005) and we are due to start this holiday in two weeks.

I have just received a letter from our travel company, telling me that due to beach restoration work, the beach outside our hotel will not be available for the whole of September.

They have also stated that they have made arrangements for us to use the nearby beach at Occidental Jack Tar Village, and that they will provide a half hourly shuttle bus to transport us to this nearby beach. The bus starts at 9.00am and finishes at 5.00pm.

I am deeply disappointed by this as we booked this hotel because it was situated on the beach.

Please can you answer the following questions

How far from my hotel (Iberostar Costa Dorada) is this 'other' beach?

Is it within easy walking distance?

How long will the transport take to get us to the other beach?

Is this other beach any better or worse than the beach at the Iberostar?

Please help

Hi Hlywud

Thanks for your reply.

Is it really that bad???

Don't think that I can book into another hotel at this very late stage

Poisondwarf

Well if you can't rebook, c'est la vie, take it in stride the Ibersotar has a great pool and it is not to far away to the alotted beach.

How bad it is nobody really knows or has said but they have a sandsucker barge that is pumping new sand from the ocean onto the beach.

Hi Hlywud,

Well, as you say, c'est la vie.

I ll take it in my stride and 'suck it and see' (just like the sandsucker situated out to sea) :)

Another question,

How long ago was the Occidental Jack Tar Village renamed the Holiday Golden Resort?

I have recieved an email from a friend in Management at Iberostar regarding the regeneration of Playa Dorada beach. It reads as follows:

"We would like to inform you that due to the regeneration work that will take place starting Friday Sept 1, 2006 for 3-4 weeks by the Secretariat of Tourism for the Dominican Republic, and for safety reasons for all our guests our beach will be unavailable until the end of the operation".

Hope this helps to ease peoples worries.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies, I am still very disapointed that I will be unable to use the beach outside of my hotel.

As I am due to start my holiday in exactly two weeks, it is far too late to try and look for an alternative holiday or even alternative accomodation.

I am now in dispute with my tour company, and the answers to the following questions would help me tremendously.

1) Can anyone tell me when the Occidental Jack Tar Village was renamed the Holiday Golden Resort?

2) When did the government of the Domican Republic announce that they would be starting work on this particular beach?

If I think of any further questions I will post them here.

Many Thanks

The change in Jack Tar was annouced at least 6 months ago. It is still undergoing renovations and not scheduled to reopen until November. More than likely it won't be ready until December. The Casino and Mangu disco have remained open.

The beach repenisment wasn't announced until about 6 weeks ago although I'm sure the project was planned and put out for bids much before that.

Perhaps the announcement of it being changed was over 6 months ago, but it's official name change has been less. I don't know when exactly, but I stayed in Playa Dorada in March, and the hotel was definitely still called Jack Tar.

I forgot to add, I had heard that the renovations on Jack Tar would not be completed until November. As in, that would also be the official opening date for Holiday Golden. If you are travelling in 2 weeks time, it would have to be opening ahead of schedule?? (unlikely)

Iberostar beach closure

Don't know if this is helpful to anyone but since me and my partner received the letter about the beach closure Thomson have allowed us to select another hotel and have refunded us the price difference.

I was desperate for a hotel with its own beach and therefore was obviously very disappointed to receive the letter.

We were also told that we were within our rights to have a full refund (which we didn't want).

I've stayed at Iberostar many times and it is probably THE BEST resort in that entire area. I would not rebook if I were you on account of the beach situation. As someone else mentioned here the pool at Iberostar is really beautiful and it really is very close by shuttle to Jack Tar Village it is one the first resorts you encounter when you enter the Playa Dorado complex which is right next door to Iberostar. Though a bit inconvenient I know, it is well worth it. Hope this helps.
I can't answer anything about the renaming of the hotel hadn't heard that and actually a bunch of my friends just stayed there for a big bash labor day weekend and all the flyers still called it Occidental Jack Tar Village so not sure when the renaming came about.
Good luck!

Hi all,

Once again, many thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread.

Our honeymoon will shortly be upon us and we are really looking forward to it. We are not going to let the lack of beach spoil our special holiday. (at least we are going to try and not let it spoil it)

Katey,
Its good to know that Thompson have allowed you to select another hotel and have refunded the price difference. We have not been offered anything and, indeed, could not have accepted a hotel change at such a late stage. I simply do not have the time to research another hotel.

Your comments are most welcome. :) I booked the Iberostar as it is, in my opinion, the best hotel in the area.

I will post back on here when I get back

Based on reports on another board (guests currently at ICD) the work is finished at Costa Dorada and they are moving towards Playa Dorada..

Hi all,

FireGuy,
Well, that really is good news.
I do hope that the reports that you have been hearing, that the work is finished at the Costa Dorada, are indeed correct. (I have just sent you a pm)

Happy holidays to me and my future wife. :)

Glad to hear it, I look forward to your comments as I truly believe that you will not be dissapointed. I just returned this week from Breezes, located in Caberete and I was sadly dissapointed, the facility is NOTHING like what their brochure makes them out to be. The resort is pretty old and in dire need of renovations. I spent the entire time wishing I was back at Iberostar!!! Enjoy.
