Offically the authorities would not let you into the National Park Armando Bermudez without a guide and that is for a good reason. People got lost before in this area.

There are a few other shorter hiking-trails (for instance-Mogote-mountain)around Jarabacoa that can be done in a day by yourself if that is what you want.

As a matter of fact I know the son of an engineer who dissapeared in the mountains in the 80's. And then there's the story of those kids (scouts?) who got lost and found their way out two days later and miles away from where they were supposedly heading.

Hiking alone in those mountains could be bad mojo! I did some hiking when I was in the university and was dating some jock, I can see now how that was really stupid (both dating him and hiking without a guide).

And I knew the engineer and several people that were with him.
Guides are cheap.
