If you are going to be staying in a tourist area, Canadian dollars will be just fine. Outside the tourist areas, you may find that only Dominican pesos will be accepted, or sometimes US Dollars. Of course, some folks don't turn down money of any kind.

Every tourist area will have cambios to exchange your Canadian dollars to Dominican Pesos. Some say they get a better deal if they change to US Dollars in Canada and change to Dominican Pesos once they arrive, but I think the difference would be negligible.

Hi Scotty, Either will do. Cdn money can be exchanged easily at all banks or cambios(money exchange houses) in PP or SD. Exchange rates vary. You could get 10 - 12 pesos for every Cdn dollar or 15 - 16 pesos for every american. Here's a site you might want to check out for the exchange rates b/4 you go to the DR. http://www.oanda.com/converter/classic Enjoy yourself! Not sure if you are still required to pay the $10 dollars american on departure or not. The last time I was there in Dec/99, it wasn't required but, I always make sure that I have at least 10 US just in case.

Exchange your money in pesos in the D.R. Make sure you have a few 1$ american dollars for the airport tip in the D.R. because the dominicans cannot exchange our 1$ and 2$ canadian dollars

You can use either, but make sure to have $US20 cash when you are leaving at the airport. We ran into some trouble when we were leaving. We only had American Traveller's Cheques and the airport would accept nothing but US cash. Just thought I would let you in on that so you would not be caught up in the same kind of complexity which we endured!

We just got back yesterday and the exchange in the hotel was 9.70 peco's for Canadian Dollars and 15.50 for U.S. We were given 15.65 for U.S. at the bank at Bavaro Plaza.
