I need driving direction from Castabar to Santo Domingo

1) Taxi to POP--$10
2) METRO to Santo Domingo(RD$300)
3)Taxi to Jaragua(RD$100-$125)
Total 750 pesos more or less.
Round trip? RD$1500.

No sweat, no strain. Take a light jacket, and a good book.

With an attitude like that I think it will best for you to find your own Directions. Anything I was going to say in giving directions to you will get rammed down my throat I suspect. Have a good journey via Jarabacoa, Costanza & all points West!!

That was just HB being HB. You are probably the 500th person he has given that advice to (either to take the bus or hire his friend JJ's cab.) The underlying premise is that it is unsafe for any "newbie" to drive in the DR. He is not the only one on the board who believes in this premise, just the most prolific.

Turn right (West) onto highway 5 on exiting Costumbar. You will pass bye maimon and go through a short tunnel. Continue on Highway 5 til it intersects with the Autopista Duarte (highway 1), where you will turn left, toward Santiago. This road will actually take you all the way to the capital, but in going through Santiago you need to follow the signs to Santo Domingo, and the little signs with the pictures of an airplane, which indicate you are headed toward the airport. Once you get through Saintago on the autopista, it is about 2 hours to Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo experts may know a better way, but I would get off on Avenida John F Kennedy and take this to Avenida Maxima Gomez, where you will turn right. This road will take you to the malecon (George Washington), where you will turn left. The Jaragua will be not too far on your left.

You will pass many "bombas" on the way, as well as restaurants and colmados, where you can stop for a pit stop, a cold one or a bite to eat. One that comes to mind is a Texaco between La Vega and Bonao at the turnoff to San Fransisco. They sell fresh spit cooked pork there, among other things.

sweetdbt: Please understand this. I have no, absolutely no relationship with "JJ" other than the fact that he provides an outstandingly good service. I always suggest alternatives, such as local bus transportation.

And the reason I try to insist on using public transportation are the draconian laws which govern traffic "incidents" in the DR. Why even risk a very stressful occasion, when there are at least two alternatives?
1) Public transport as suggested
2) Hiring a taxi for the day

You might want to talk to Bill Kirkman up in POP some day and ask him (or Tim Hall, the Canadian consular agent) how many he has seen in jail for some really minor incident...

A friend of mine just recently had a tree trunk fall on his windscreen as he drove to POP.

-But I bought insurance!
-But you didn't buy glass damage insurance!!!

It cost him about $300 which his CC company says he will probably have to pay.

If he hadn't taken any insurance, his CC company would have covered the damage!!

Should you read this igualmente, feel free to ignore ALL red lights at traffic crossings on your way down. These are obviously not meant for you - purely us plebs that live here & have a little more experience. I have driven here for the last 14 years & although Santo Domingo is marginally easier than Paris, Milan, Hyde Park Corner, Tripoli , ............. et al. it is still not a place I like to drive unless I HAVE to. Bus is much simpler, quicker (for me) & less stressful!! ~ Grahame.

Leave DNA sample and dental records with somebody before you depart. Many times ID difficult after accidents.

Leave bail money with somebody you trust. Also be sure to carry a cell phone loaded with plenty of minutes. If you have an accident, you WILL go to jail.

Otherwise, have an enjoyable trip.

Its complicated to get there from so far away.
I will give it a shot. Take a right turn as you leave from costambar on to main highway. Now you wait and wait, until a metro bus comes along. Follow that bus to santiago. Now you wait on metro stop and wait for the bus to leave for santo domingo. Now follow that bus to santo domingo. Once in santo domingo, ask anyone where malecon is and then go there and drive up and won until you see the hotel.

remember AZB...not everyone is up to driving as fast as those big bus drivers drive..........even a crazy wild eyed gringo like me had trouble keeping up with a few of them.

At least I hope he will.

I just talked to a friend and it took him an hour to get from Clinica Abreu to the highway Duarte by way of Malecon, Avenida Luperon......infreakin' terrible!
