Select Contracts to develop Santo Domingo theme park

Dubai-based leisure and entertainment turnkey solutions provider, Select Contracts, has successfully delivered the conceptual design and feasibility study for a 700 acre leisure and entertainment development to the Government of the Dominican Republic.
The landmark project, which is being championed by President Leonel Fernandez and numerous Major Baseball League players, involves a theme park, water park, family entertainment center, hotels, golf course, villas, baseball stadium and a hall of fame.
The project will be home to the first Caribbean theme park as well as celebrating the country's contribution to baseball.
Select Contracts has been appointed to see the project through from concept to operations and is also a stakeholder in the project, which represents another stepping stone for the vertically integrated company as they seek to become globally renowned for their leisure and entertainment expertise and knowledge.
Sales and Marketing Manager Sanjay Murthy said 'We have an ambitious strategy for growth within our specific areas of expertise and projects such as the baseball theme park can only help us to achieve these goals. Leisure and entertainment are two very desirable areas for development and our vast experience in these areas is invaluable for our clients. This certainly put us in good stead when we were chosen for this iconic project in the Dominican Republic.'
Select Contracts will have full-time project staff in the country from early 2007 and expect the park to be open in late 2009.

Baseball-land
President Leonel Fernandez has approved the turning of the Quisqueya Ball Park into a baseball theme park ? Baseball Land.
Project promoter, engineer Jesus Rodriguez Sandoval says it would be more like the Arlington Ballpark of Texas, the Coors Field of Colorado or the Turner Field of Atlanta. The project calls for the remodeling and expansion of the Quisqueya Ball park, construction of a 28,000 square meter tower, a four-star hotel with 36,443 square meters of construction, 14 towers for apartments and four villas with 15,396 square meters of construction, a 7,790 square meter shopping mall, a 11,330 square meter baseball museum, a 30,400 meter parking building, plazas, green areas and recreational areas.
Works began early this month with the relocation of the baseball offices located within the stadium.
Rodriguez recently presented the project to the visiting vice president of the Mets, Jeff Wilpor and Mets general manager Omar Minaya who met at his home. President Leonel Fernandez also was there for the meeting. During the meeting, the possible visit of the Mets during the 2006 spring training was discussed, as well as the possibility of pMajor League Baseball games being played here in 2007, when Baseball Land complex would be completed.
More than 100 Dominicans are expected to be on MLB rosters come the 2005 season. The Listin Diario reports that on 16 November, President Fernandez had spoken with the owner of the Anaheim Angels, Arte Moreno and invited that team to hold their spring training events in Santo Domingo, an invitation that was well received. The call came on occasion of Vladimir Guerrero winning the Most Valuable Player award of the American League.

Baseball Land
President Leonel Fernandez announced the start of construction of "Baseball Land," a theme park around the Quisqueya Stadium this month. He said that four or five baseball fields will be built, Mario Melvin Soto's memorabilia museum would be part of the complex, as well as restaurants, bars and shops. The Quisqueya Ball Park would be extended to seat 33,000 spectators. The bleachers are to be covered. He also said that a hotel would be built behind the ballpark to house ball players as well as private offices. "We want to bring the pre-season games in 2006 and 2007 to host official Major League games, which would be transmitted to the US, he said. Fernandez held a luncheon at the Presidential Palace yesterday for several Dominican ball players, on the eve of their return to the US for the Major League spring training. He said that clinics would be held in Baseball Land, and tourists would be able to shake hands and have their photographs taken with Dominican major league ball players there. Public Works Minister Freddy Perez said that the first phase would cost US$20 million and most of the financing would come from the private sector. He explained that the government would provide the land and the initial funding. The project will entail the demolition of businesses and housing in the Avenida Tiradentes, San Cristobal, Pepillo Salcedo and Euclides Morillo areas.
Attending the luncheon were Julio Lugo, Neifi Perez, Aramis Ramirez, Jose Offerman, Ronnie Belliard, Albert Pujols, Julio Santana, Odalis Perez, D'angelo Jimenez, Juan Carlos Cruz, Alfredo Griffin and George Bell.

Well it's back. Looks like they're going ahead with it. Here is an article out of HOY:

110 Million Dollars for:
Re-modeled Quisqueya Stadium
Hotels
Malls
Convention Center
Subterranean Parking
Apartment Towers with 300 total apartment units
Playgrounds

It's going to be completed along with the artificial island and the 4 zentillion dollars port of Manzanillo that another Dubai company is going to develop. I can't believe there are people who still believe these government announcements...

I will believe it when I see it.

In my opinion, there is no domestic market for this type of project, because most Dominicans can not afford it.

And I doubt many enough tourists would leave their resorts, even for something like this.
