Firefighters don't return

Four Dominican firefighters out of a group of five who were sent to the United States for training have not returned to the DR. The firefighting team departed from the Cibao International Airport in Santiago. In the second trip to the US, three firefighters left for training and only one, Pedro Bautista, returned. He has since been promoted to the rank of captain as a result. The authorities are investigating the incident and want to find out whether airport personnel were responsible for aiding the firefighters' escape. Emilio Antonio Filion and Pedro Antonio Almonte are among the four who stayed in the US. The Cibao Airport firefighting corps is an independent firefighting group started by authorities at the airport and has previously sponsored two training courses in New York.

Bad choice of words. Escape? Escape from where? Escape from what?
I taught DR is Paradise, escape from Paradise?

Yours,
J.T.

How about 'defection'?:cheeky:

'Flight' would have been the obvious choice, but it doesn't work because of the confusion with 'flight' as in air travel.

I would suggest 'deflection'. Their return trip was 'deflected' by their desire for a better life in the US. Or even 'deviation'. Their return trip was aborted, due to 'deviation' from their original official plans...

"to find out whether airport personnel were responsible for aiding the firefighters' deviation"

has a certain ring to it, but...

Why would they need the airport staff to help them, anyway? Wouldn't it be just a question of not turning up for the return flight?

And people wonder why Dominicans have such a tough time getting tourist visas to the US.

True, why should the US Consulate go through the trouble of a tourist visa? Just give every damn one of them a Green Card on the first try.

Maybe these guys had a burning desire to stay in NYC. And then they went and extinguished any hope of also becoming fire captains here. And if they are caught by Homeland Security, they will be hosed. And axed after they are returned to the DR.

Maybe they can become police officers.

If several of these firefighters did not return to Santiago after their supposed training in the U.S, then this becomes another glaring example of why the American consulates are so very difficult on the general Dominican population to obtain U.S. tourist visas. Such illegal defections only perpetuate the U.S.'s tough stance on entry visas granted to Dominicans.

i'm sure they're hiding out somewhere in Washington Heights with their other illegal friends or relatives. as compared to a fire captain, i guess a life as an illegal is not so bad.

good luck to them....

isn't it a bit of a worry that firefighters are promoted to Captain based upon their ability to catch a flight home rather than their ability to fight fires?
