hi everyone,

new to this site...3 girlfriends and i are planning a trip to the DR for our spring break (feb here in canada) i have a few questions...i was in the DR for a month this past summer and had the best time in cabarete. so much fun surfing and partying on the beach, so i want to go to Cabarete...but my friends want white sand...how does Cabarete compare with Punta Cana? (we're looking for nice beach, relaxing time, good partying at night, young people...oh, and we're all 21 or 22 years old)Also, what is the weather like in February? Oh, and anyone know about Casa Laguna and Viva wyndham Tangerine? We were looking to stay at Tangerine probably and I was wondering if it's safe to walk from the resort to the bars in town (lax and onnos etc.) at night. i think it's about a 10 minute walk down the beach. and surfing...how much is it for lessons and rentals? i took lessons at 321 takeoff this summer. teachers were so nice and helpful. loved it.

one last thing, i heard from someone that there is a new law in cabarete, that discos and bars have to close by 12 on weekdays and 2 on weekends...is this true?
suggestions and info would be greatly appreciated!

well I havent actually set foot in Punta cana, but from what i gather the beaches are much better there than cabarette....but they just re did some beaches in the cabarette area....not sure exactly which ones...there wont be much party life in Punta cana....especially compared to cabarette....I think the curfew does apply to the cabarette area.although i heard that some resorts are exempt from that law...but seeing is believeing. and I am sure someone from that area will answer on that front.

if you just want relaxation on pristine beaches with the hotel help taking care of your needs...then Punta Cana is the place....but if you want night life and mixing it up.....more than tranquil beaches...then cabarette is a better choice

good luck

Try resorts on the Plata Doranda beach, you can find a Viva Wyndham resort there as well. The beach is just completing the renovations, its now a white sandy beach.
You will also find Discotheques everywhere. There is a curfew set in place but when I was there 2 weeks ago I was told the discos will stay open during the high season for tourists....
If you are looking to stay in Cabarete try the Azzurro Beach resort ask to stay in building 7 (new building) and you will be like 2 mins from the discos and it safe to walk on the beach to and from just be smart.

Hope this helps

OMG,

I've never read so much bad advice in one thread!!!

Playa Dorada is nothing but All Inclusive resorts, and as another poster putts it, AI?s are for the newlyweds and nearlydeads.

Punta Cana is geared for the geriatric crowd, yes the beaches there are beautiful, but one has to look out for the beached whales!!! (The human type)

If your 21 stick with Cabrette!

thanks for all the suggestions everyone...my sister actually visited Playa Dorada and really did not like it there, said it was very crowded and touristy, and an older crowd. we really want to have fun and party for our break, so i think we're going to go with cabarete, hopefully...if the girls will be able to deal with golden/brown sand. just a question about azzuro...is it much more expensive than tangerine? it seems to be, from the travel sites i've been looking at. and also, is it best to book 2 weeks before? that's what everyone has been telling me..so hopefully we're being smart by waiting this long to book...

ohh sooo excited to be back in the DR! just a few more weeks...

Firstly, be clear I DON'T KNOW THIS, I'm saying it as something for you to think about... February is high season, so probably not a lot of available rooms. Lots of younger people from you country are heading to DR for Spring Break already. Therefore, two weeks before might be too late to book and prices would, I'd guess, stay high or even get higher.

And Cabarete is the place to go without a doubt! The beach has been 're-done' there and is now nice and white.

Azzuro should be cheaper then Wyndum. If you go to DR1 website I think you can get an idea of the costs. Another choice is Hotel Kaoba. It's right across from the beach, very nice and much cheaper. It's not AI but that can be less expensive then the $45USD plus per person then the others. Check it out and do the math.

I agree... for your group, Cabarete is the place to be. The beach is probably 100% wider than when you were here last, and it's soft and white sand. The curfew is still in place, but I believe it is 1 am weekdays and 2 am weekends. If you want to keep partying, walk or take a cab or moto conchos to the Ocean Sands Casino on the east end of town, they stay open until at least 3 and have a brand new disco upstairs that gets packed on the weekends...

As for hotels, unless you want AI, I wouldn't recommend the Wyndham. Go to Cabarete - Dominican Republic - by Active Cabarete
and.or do a little searching and you'll find several reasonable hotel options. The food and drinks in town can be very reasonable as well...not so much at Lax though ;)

Azzuro is closer to all of the bars & restaurants in town either via the beach or along the sidewalk. A 1 minute walk and very safe. Being an all-inclusive hotel, however, you may not take full advantage of the restaurants in town.

For a group of you, take a look at a place like Palm Beach Condos. These are 2 bedroom/2 bath oceanfront condos with kitchen on the beach that run about $150-$170 a night. Not bad at all if you split the cost 4 ways with friends. Hotel Cabarete Palm Beach Condos and Studios

Hotel El Magnifico, Olas de Oro, Nanny Estates also offer similar accomodations. They're a somewhat longer walk to the center of town... not a problem during the day but at night you might want to take a taxi (except Magnifico is a fairly easy walk but their beach area has eroded significantly). You can find their websites on google with little difficulty.

thanks for all the new info! i am kinda of concerned about the prices going up for reading week, but our school has a different reading week than most, and i was assuming that there the hotels wouldn't all be full. i'd really like to stay at a smaller resort, but AI seems like the easiest and probably cheapest for us. (student budget!) i'd love to get a condo, but airfare plus that, and food would probably be too expensive for us.

thanks for letting me know about the curfew as well.

oh, and the beaches have changed?! there is white sand now? that is great news! is it only a few beaches in particular, or everywhere?

Casa Laguna/Tropical Beach Cabarete
The Tropical Beach part is right on the beach and at the centre of things and the Casa Laguna part is just across the main road from it and a bit cheaper.
You can use the facilities at both, Tropical Beach part is best I stayed there 3 years ago but they could have building work going on now because I walked past there in December and there was scaffolding all around the back.

For the young set, it's Cabarete hands down. Viva Wyndham Tangerine is a good choice. You can perfectly walk the long stretch of the beach. Because of all the businesses that line the beach, it is safe at night. Have walked it from the Tangerine.

Viva Wyndham Tangerine - Dominican Republic (DR1)

I would not pay more for an all inclusive because there are so many attractions on the beach that will keep you away from the hotel.

Another Cabarete option -- non all inclusive --
Cabarete Palm Beach Condos - Dominican Republic (DR1)

Hotel Villa Taina - Dominican Republic (DR1)
This hotel is smack in the middle of Cabarete's business strip.

I agree

Cabarete, not Punta Canal, absolutely.
Dolores' suggestions are spot on.
And DavidZ knows the Ocean Sands Casino is the new
hotspot afterhours because the curfew does not
apply to them. For those in their 20's, Cabarete is so much
better than Cancun, South Beach Miami, you name it.....very
hip, very hot and very fun. Be reminded that drug possession in
the DR can be a nightmare so users should think twice,
or three times, stay away from it.....plz. Party hearty and use
common sense.

Cabarete, hands down. From there you can visit the whole north coast. If you're in Punta Cana, you're stuck.

here's the truth

Hi all,

I just got back from Cabarete last week. I was there over xmas & new year with my 7 girlfriends (aged early 20's) so I think I can advise you well if your looking for a girlies party holiday!:D

We stayed one week at the Azzurro and one week at the tropical beach club due to overbooking. The Azzurro is a lovely hotel with nice pools and great food. Its bigger and more luxurious than the tropical beach club but there is no animation team to keep you occupied during the day or night.

The tropical beach club is smaller and not as luxurious but it is friendly and cosy and more than adequate. The pools are small (you have to go across to the Laguna side if you want to relax by the pool). The Laguna side is where the action is most of the time, with the entertainment team based there and the shows at night. They do stuff on the beach too.

For night life we would go to the bars on the beach (ono's, Bambu) in cabarete or we would go to Sosua for the disco's (59, Latino's, sea crest). There is a lot of working girls but if you mind your own your perfectly fine!

The bars and disco's in cabarete & sosua close at 1/2am during the week and 2/3am at the weekends. Everyone from the bars/disco's would then go to the casino in cabarete (ocean sands) to party till 5am.

Hope this helps! I have been to both cabarete and Playa Dorada and cabarete wins hands down.
