Inauguration of Samana

Andres VanderHorst announced today that official opening of the Inernational Airport of Samana at El Catey will be Feb. 1, 2007. This is the official opening with all the fanfare, not the soft opening since Nov. 1, 2006.
This $80 million construction project is 99.5% completed. And it's whale-watching season there. Sweet.

tflea is talking about when all the suv's come from the capital with all their talking heads and cut the ribbon. flights started nov 6th i believe it was.

but choppers are the transport of choice.
Jeepetas are so pedestrian these days!

hey that's my birthday! maybe they're planning on flying me down there for my birthday since i hectored so much for this bloody airport!

didn't know that everybody had a chopper now. i've been gone for a while.

Of course everyone's travelling in choppers these days. With Santo Domingo traffic so bad it's approaching total gridlock (see Nals post on Forbes Most Congested Cities) everyone whose anyone is taking to the air.
