is it ok to answer in English, it don't matter to me but...others?

so I understand what you are saying about the 80's, those were my clubing years so I love the merengues and merengueros. There was a lot of creativity then and I think you maybe right about the lyrics now a days, somewhat poor, but these are different times and the merengue does have more "mambo" like you guys are saying. Sometimes I really wish more Dominican would write more merengue lyrics and not just copy from other genres like cumbia, rancheras etc.

la salsa has been down in quality too.....since la fania only a few good salseros have remained....theres a few salseros retired that will come back like willie colon....as he announced it in DR a few days ago.....going to merengue again...nowadays merengue can have a good mambo and good lyrics....good lyrics don't mean it has to be only about love....theres a lot of good escritores de musica in our country......we should give merit to all of those writers who try to make a diiference with good merengue

Unfortunately merengue as we know it is dead. Reggaeton, bachata and lack on innovation killed it. There's a new generation of Dominicans who won't know how to dance Merengue as all they listen to is reggaeton. I grew up listening to some of these guys and have a ton of their music (Aramis Camilo, Jossie Esteban, Anibal Bravo, La Coco Band, La Gran Manzana, Dionis Fernandez, La Artilleria, and Jerry Vargas to name a few...)

That's just your opinion. For many people, merengue is still well and alive!!
merengue will NEVER die!!

It is considered " dead" by some " viejucos, anticuados". What makes music is just that" music", the melody, not just lyrics, just like Bethoven, Bach, Mozart, Chopin and other masters of classical music.

Merengue is a complex genre, that requires skills to compose(the music), due to its instruments ( trumpets, saxophones, keyboard, bajo, tambora, g?ira). Not like porquerias like reggaeton, the same monotomous beat that any chimp can make in a computer.

We got talented composers like Chevalier, who has composed to many artists, no surprise that their cd's have become hits in the '90's.

one theme is Ricky Castro's " hazme coro". I pay attention to the saxophones, the trumpets, the tambora", and I think to myself " dayum ! this is music ! this guy is a genius composing this! this is hard!

See, I view music in that angle, not just " lyrics". Unfortunately, "lyrics" is not a Dominican talent, Mexicans have the crown for that, people like Juan Gabriel, Marco Antonio Solis, etc, but Dominicans are blessed with tremendous MAMBO ! , and that makes up for it. You go to clubs all over the world, Europe, Japan, India, Africa, Australia, and you'll hear Dominican merengue music !!!

If is so porqueria? why they play it then?

btw, about 1/3 of 80's merengues were " fusilajes". People like Ruby Perez, how many fusilajes can you count from him alone? " merengue fusilados" sound " pretty", but THEY ARE NOT DOMINICAN!

I'll rather listen to a well composed merengue from a Dominican with lots of mambo, than one with lyrics copied from Laura Pausini, Man?,Ricardo Montaner, and others.

Very rare that other nationlaities copy from Dominican lyrics, like Mexico's Garibaldi copying songs written for Sergio Vargas ( la ventanita).

Conclusion: lyrics are very hard to come by, you gotta have " muchos hierros"( lots of talent) in order to come out with a good piece. DR is not the powerhouse of this, but is the powerhouse of MAMBO !!!

and is not just " regular merengue", we also have merengue tipico a.k.a perico ripiao. with artists like Krisspy, aguacate, Robert Vargas, Yovany Polanco, that give it a " modern callejero twist". They have revived perico, sparking interest in the youth. Perico Ripiao used to be viewed as " some hick music, of campesinos brutos y super machistas), these guys have given it a new dimension.

It's on the" ear of the beholder" to call a merengue either good or bad. What may be " bad, garbage" to you, might be good merengue to me. There are people with different tastes. Each Artist has his fan base.

Don't get me wrong. I love 80s merengues, I still listen to them. But I'm not " stucked in the 80s", for me, merengue is good IN ALL THE DECADES. I adapt to the changes.

theres only a percentage of ppl who like only mambo....i can dance to a few mambo but i also want to dance to a slower merengue...want to dance to a nice merengue with my girl...u imagine me dancing..."pajaro malo"...Chinito quiere la'pa" with my nice decent...girl....she would'nt mind dancing to it once but all the time..come on.....merengue with mambo has too much sexysm....we need to have merengue will all kinds of themes.

There are variety of merengues, not everything is " chupa tu paleta" out there. You have el torito, el jeffrey, a couple of people out there. If you want to dance those types of merengues, you can always play some 80s stuff. I do that all the time at parties, and people get delighted.

One thing that i liked about the 80s is that there were more women singing. Something that is rare now. That's basically the only flaw that i find in the genre. It needs more females !

true.....we need more female artist but most of all we need to support them.....we need those chicas del can......miriam cruz is back...milly she'll be there for a while.....rubby perez daughter she'll have her own band soon.....i bet theres a lot more hidden treasures waiting for someone to discover them....and don't get me wrong...i know that merengue will be better when merengueros start to have a "sana competicion".....el que trate de sacar el mejor disco.....que incluya letra..jocosa amorosa social o como sea con un uso increible de los instrumentos.....que pongan a pitar esas trompetas y acordeones....u know..two of the instruments i want to listen more is La Tambora y la Guira....does 2 are fundametal instruments of el merengue....theres this song...."El Guardia del Arsenal" de Dionnys Fernandez y El Equipo...wow...como suena esa tambora y esa Guira hacen que me de teriquito..nice merengue..u guys should download it......

Hatuey....you sound exactly like my father, in age and in thinking...music has to change, it is always evolving, and it will always try to develop new styles and new identity, old school is exactly that...it is what it is, music made in the 70's could not have carried over to 2007 PLEASE!....now don't get me wrong....I love and still listen to old school merengue, but these days, if you played that type of music all night in a club, you will be shut down in a week.....Mambo, bomba style, along with reggaeton is what is still being played in clubs, not Dominicano Soy...this does not attract the younger crowd anymore...only folks like my grandfather, and my parents!!

Dominicans have had total dominance in romantic style merengue for along time..but they treat there music like food....Monday thru Friday la bandera....Saturday and Sunday platano with a side dish....when Puerto Ricans came with a more suttle style with many letra's, Dominican's called it to plain, shallow, to much flash and choreography on stage, Puerto ricans proved that with support and with a more softer style that less was more...there is a market for new school music, remember they would never exist if there weren't, record labels are not in the business to loose money, Sergio Vargas, Tulile, along with Oro Solido, Pena Suazo, and Elvis Crespo are all financially secured! with bachateros, and some salseros as well old and new!

the old school artist had there moment, leaving us with awesome memories of a more conservative time, with great music to enjoy for a life time, but I do not want to go to a record store nor a club, and watch my grandfather on stage or on a cover, wearing depends diapers, dentures, with bi-focul glasses, in a jerry curl, with a johnny ventura zoot suit, talking about he's going to give an 18 or 19 yr old female a hard on :ermm: well anyway I got to go for now... talk to you later.

bueno m'ijo tienes razon y sentido en casi todo lo que dices, peeeero....there many young people who don't want to hear or see all that awful language in the regeton music and the merengue equivalent its just trendy stuff.

I enjoy many different kinds of music... .....like there are still great salsa being written and performed there is also great merengues being written and performed just not as much as we merengue lovers would like.
But many of us would agree that the 80's had an explosion of great merengue bands and those of us who are fans enjoyed it and still love it when its played at parties, I understand that the young ones don't know what its about 'cause they weren't there.

You cannot compare what's going on now with what went on then, yes it was classy and elegant but there are merengueros who are still working hard at doing just that right now.
