My sister and I are planning a first-time trip (from Florida) to the DR. She has been all over the world and spent much time in South America and speaks fluent Spanish. I have never left the US. She is interested in windsurfing, snorkeling, diving. I'm interested in Classy Accommodations, Historical sightseeing, fishing, sailing, and girls.

I was thinking of flying in to Puerto Plata, taxi to Cabarete and staying at a 2-br apart. (Cabarete Palm Beach Condos or Ocean Dream Vacation Rentals?).

After about three days, traveling back to Puerto Plata, and flying to Santo Domingo and staying at a top class hotel ( Renaissance Jaragua Hotel And Casino, Hilton Santo Domingo, Sofitel Frances, Sofitel Nicolas De Ovando Santo Domingo, or Intercontinental V Centena...?

Or rather than flying from Puerto Plata to Santo Domingo, we could rent a car and drive to Santiago and stay a night there, then drive to Santo Domingo.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

All your choices in SD as well as both places in Cabarete are very nice... you shouldnt b e disappointed with any of them...

As for fly vs. drive... Santiago would make a nice stop-over and the drive isn't too bad, but it can be confusing, especially getting into and out of Santiago...and SD is incredibly congested, but fairly well laid-out. If you dont have too much luggage, you could take the Caribe Tours or Metro Bus from Sosua (caribe only) or POP (either) to Santiago, then again from Santiago into SD...

Metro Bus & Caribe Tours are now both running to Cabarete too. Not sure when they started, only within the last month at the most. Caribe Tours office/stop is Cabarete side of the Esso Station in the new plaza, I *think* Metro is closer to the Esso. RD$100 Santiago-Cabarete with CT, I think RD$150 with Metro.

Thanks for the info Keith! I noticed CT buses stopped in Cabarete and looked at their website but didnt see it on the schedule. The name of the plaza where the new CT office is is called Plaza Media Luna I believe that is also where the stop is...btw, they also have a cambio in the same office with the best exchange rates in Cabarete...and probably Sosua as well.
