U.S. Passports in France

At a French airport... A group of American retired teachers recently went
to France on a tour. Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, was part of
the tour group.

At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry-on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked
sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France, previously.
"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."

The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."
"Impossible!" barked the officer. "Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France."

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly
explained. "Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in '44 to
help liberate this country, I couldn't find any Frenchmen to show it to."

Talk about them frenchies!!!

That is the only country in the world that I have been where the people practically expect every foreigner to be able to speak their language. Most french people can speak english but if you speak to them in english (with an accent of course that shows that you are not french), they will still reply you in french and pretend like they do not understand you even if they do. It does not matter to them if you are lost and trying to find your way. You better speak french otherwise you might remain lost.

I just can never seem to understand that about them.

Au contraire!

I never experienced episodes like that.

Of course, there are rude Frenchmen in
Paris as in many large cities around the
world. Even my French friends outside
of Paris say they can be treated rudely.

I guess people have never been to NYC.

Try speaking English with a heavy Spanish
accent in the USA. Touche.
