IM DOMINICAN/HAITIAN AMERICAN. I WILL BE GOING TO LONDON --UNIVERISTY OF WESTMINSTER TO STUDY NEXT SPRING. AS SHALLOW AS THIS MAY SEEM, MY BIGGEST WORRY IS FINDING SOMEONE TO DO MY HAIR. I HAVE TYPICAL VERY BIG NATURALLY CURLY HAIR (THINK KELIS/ALICIA KEYS) AND I DONT WANT TO BE WEARING THE CURLY LOOK FOR 6 MONTHS. IF ANYONE KNOWS A GOOD STYLIST---DOES NOT HAVE TO BE DOMINCAN BUT THEY ARE BANGIN WHEN IT COMES TO STRAIGHTING HAIR--I WILL GREATLY APPREACIATE. i DONT USE RELAXER OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT ON MY HAIR SO I PREFER SALONS THAT KNOW HOW TO MANAGE HAIR THAT HAS BEEN CHEMICALLY TREATED. IVE DONE A LITTLE RESEARCH SO I KNOW I WILL PROBALLY NOT FIND A SALON IN CENTRAL WEST LONDON THAT CAN HANDLE MY HAIR. IM AWARE AND COMFORTABLE WITH THE FACT THAT I MAY BE TRAVELING OUTSIDE MY AREA TO GET TO A GOOD HAIRDRESSER. IM NO STRANGER TO THE HOOD BABY.PLEASE LET ME KNOW COST FOR WASH,SET AND BLOWDRY Y CON PLANCHA. ANY TIPS ON WHAT AREAS TO HIT UP WOULD BE GREAT TOO.

London is so diverse there is certain to be a salon catering for your needs, although I doubt there is an actual Dominican one. The nearest will be Jamaican or other English-speaking Caribbean, especially in certain parts of the city. Any idea where you'll be living?

That's very central! Near Baker Street/Paddington/Edgware Road?

That's not too far from the Ladbroke Grove/Notting Hill areas, where there are certain to be salons, and a whole lot more.

It's Madame Toussaud's, BTW. :)

yup baker st. right next to the tube. i know thats where the salons are but i always thought that area was the manhattan (upper east side) of london...overpriced and for white people. sorry to be so blunt. do you think i will be able to find a reasonably priced salon that can deal with my hair in that area?

The posher bits of London like Kensington, Knightsbridge and Chelsea are further south - to the west you have more diverse areas like Notting Hill Gate, and as you go up Ladbroke Grove it should get more 'popular'. Otherwise go south of the river to Brixton - from Baker Street, take the tube to Oxford Circus and change onto the Victoria Line southbound.

Hairdressers in the area you'll be staying in will definitely be pricey. Take Chiri's advice and try notting hill/ladbroke grove area. May still be a bit much on a students budget though. The jamaican salons are usually quite cheap but watch out when asking for a trim, especially if you have "good hair".
If you don't mind travelling south of the river, you'll find a good hairdresser for a good price. My hairdresser, based very close to New Cross station deals with all kind of hair types, afro and european. I'll send you a PM with her number.
You definitely will not find a dominican salon in London though.

Hi,
Where I live in Deptford there must be at least 10 afro-caribbean hairdressers on the high street and also a number of Dominicans living in the area, so you could combine a social visit with the hair do.

or you could try purely nature (they specialise in natural hairstyles that are not chemically treated), but this salon is in East London Stratford. their number is 020 8221 0122.

Annie, you can try Harlsden or Neasdon I think these places are not that up market and not too far from you.

But to be honest I would leave your curly hair alone you would be a lot more popular here, everyone has boring, straight hair here.....!? :bored:

I went to Westminister Uni myself some years ago, I think you will have a blast, they are well equiped and not too tough on students ;) , good luck and don't worry about finding a salon in London, there're loads.

I agree, keep it curly, straight hair is so boring. Curly hair is fun! Besides, anything goes, down here in London town!

There are many Latino's and Dominican's in London. Not sure if it helps but Elephant & Castle is like a mini Columbia in England! They have there own salon's and the area is not 'upper class' so the price's might be better for you if you are a student.

i am moving in london this month need a good dominican hair dresser or latino

Please if anybody knows about an exellent latino hair salon or a dominican hairdresser please let me know. specialized in extension and chemicall treated hair . I care a lot about having a good hair blowdry.

please contact me. I had quite a bad experience in december in a afro-european salon already in london . I think finding a good latin hairdresser or dominican will be the best.
