Hi, have booked the DR, Playa Dorada for two weeks in mid july, anyone know anything about the malaria thing, is it rife? You read all the information on the websites and its quite worrying...can anyone tell me anything? We're really looking forward to the break and also, do you have to get any other vaccinations?

Thanks,

I have made 5 trips to the DR this year and had no health concerns. Especially while on a resort you should be safe.

Does anyone know anything about vaccinations required?

Ta
IMHO, none.
Of course, there are those who would say to go to your doctor and get whatever shots he/she recommends, and maybe they're right, but look at it this way.
If us gringos can live here for years on end without any vaccines, why would a tourist need any?

A large party of us went to the docs for our jabs before our holiday and were all offered different advice/vaccines from different gp's and surgeries, so if they aren't consistent how are we supposed to know?! lol.

I've posted in another thread somewhere in response to a different question about which vaccines I keep current. But I'm sure your partner as a nurse knows there are no vaccinations against dengue. All you can do is wear cover up clothing at dusk & use a deet based repellent spray.

I had shots and took some Dukoral (against travellers diarrhea) and nonetheless on the plane home started getting awful travellers diarrhea with vomiting which lasted two days till i went to the doctor to get Cipro. Now I seem to have brought home a parasite. And all this with eating well, so you never really know. and i ate fairly carefully!
malaria wasn't a problem though and i travelled around a bit.

If you got the requisite EXPORT visas for the parasite you should be OK within a day or two. If NOT, you might have to return to the DR for another two weeks so that extraction can be commenced & liberal medication of Brugal Rum will have to be administered!! ;) ENJOY!! ~ Grahame.
