Good Morning everyone,
I'm looking for some input about the Hispaniola in Santo Domingo. Rates seem to be pretty good but I'd like some references about quality of hotel ie..rooms,service, whats close by..entertainment wise. I'm coming down in Aug for 2 weeks.
Thanks for any info!
Have a great day
:)

The Hispanola hotel and casino is just like most of the chain hotels on the avenue. This place is not new, but the rooms are in pretty good condition. I am not exactly sure of the rate, but probably about about $74 - $95 USD per day. For that money, you could get a good deal with other hotels.

If you are staying at the Hispanola, you are not too far away from other casinos and hotels. You will be near the Malecon (Waterfront area) and not to far from El Conde.

Tell me more about you and your plans - perhaps some of us could recommend another hotel.

Hispaniola

Thanks very much for the info. I'm also looking at the Fiesta. I've read alot of reviews on the hotels in SD and I'm seeing quite a few referencing "ladies of the evening" lurking around the hotels. Is this a common thing for these hotels or is this more common just for certain ones? I'll be there with my boyfriend and we really don't want to be bothred by this. I realized that everyone has to work.....I just don't want it in my face...to put it kindly.
I was concidering the following hotels:
Hispaniola,
Fiesta,
Napolitano,
Santo Domingo.
Thanks for your input and I look forward to seeing a reply from you or anyone who can shed some light on these places for me.

I used to stay in Hispaniola when I travelled here for work and quite liked it - it was adequate for my needs, did a good breakfast, and the staff were mostly friendly and helpful. It has, however, definitely seen better days, and the restaurant isn't very good.

The Hotel Santo Domingo is in better shape - I haven't actually stayed there but have attended events there and thought the food was pretty good.

Dominican Fiesta is OK but not so conveniently located.

Napolitano is probably the one to avoid, in the light of your concerns.

Hispaniola and Santo Domingo were once ?Sister Properties, ?owned by the same entity. The Hispaniola has since been sold and the result was not good. It is very worn, suffers a myriad of problems such as constant A/C breakdowns, Television going out, phones not working, limited Internet access in a tiny room by the front desk and truly uncaring management

I think both Hotels were built and owned by the Government during Trujillo?s reign.

The Santo Domingo was always the ?Higher class? of the two, catering to a high end business class, it even has a helipad

The Hispaniola has a very popular disco for the young affluent crowd as well as a nice Casino.

You may find a few ?Working girls? in the Casino, but management will not let them bother you

Hispaniola has a great breakfast buffet, beautiful pool and if you like the idea of 60?s era Caribbean d?cor, it is very nice. The problems with A/C and other mechanicals would prevent me from staying

The Santo Domingo is very nice, you definitely will not encounter working girls and the atmosphere is very upscale, like you will feel out of place not wearing a coat and tie

The SD also has a nice Concierge floor where light buffet is available along with plenty of Internet access

Neither the SD nor Hispaniola is really within walking distance of the Colonial Zone (Likely a ? hour to 45 minute walk), but can be done if adventurous, but would not advise walking it at nigh and it is one hot walk during the day

Though both are on the Malecon, they are far from the end where the ?Action? is

Good luck on your choice, and personally for the same amount of money I would stay at Jaragua or Sheraton

Great Advice! - However what do you want to spend? - How many days are you going to be in SD. I know that you said that you and your boyfriend are going to be in the room, but are you looking for a pool, spa, breakfast buffet, etc? If you are just looking for a room that is inexpensive, there are lots of nice places that you can stay at from $35 USD to $150 USD.

Normally when I go to SD, I always stay at the Jaragua. This is a Marriott property and yes, you are going to pay Marriott Rates $$$$ - During my last visit to SD, I stayed at a Guest house called Maision Gautreaux. This was excellent. This place is right next door to the Intercontinental (on the Malecon) and is in a nice place. No ladies of the night in the place, just rooms and 24 hour security at the door. I know the owner well. The rate I was charged for 3 weeks was $31 USD per day. The room was a standard size room with a king bed, private bath with shower. There was a desk in the room and the room had AC. My room (#21) was on the 3rd level and had a private balcony and sliding glass door. Daily maid service, but there is no place to eat. The lobby did have beer/soda for sale, but no food. There was TV w/Cable in every room and a safety box in the room for valuables. They had free WIFI if you need it and on the 2nd level, they have a computer for free use to the hotel guests. Very Nice! - this is the kind of hotel, that is for sleeping. Very quiet and the price is right. Here is the website if you decide to take a look. By the way, if you do, tell them that "DAVE from Rhode Island" sent ya......

Good Luck and have fun in SD - I'' be back in August.

Wow...thanks very much for all the info. I checked out SD and Jaragua and unfortunately...way outa our budget. I'm looking for about 75US per night to spend and we'll be there for 13 nights in Aug. I already looked at the Hotel Maison and yes it would be nice but due to the high temps I need a pool. That's why I'm having to look at the bigger chains. My head is ready to explode with all the choices that's why I thought I'd post help here. If I could find a place with Maison prices AND a pool....I'd do the happy-dance!

Ok, Here is What you may want to do.....

Check out the Jarragua. Of course, they have one of the best pools in the country. Very nice pool, spa, etc. But of course the hight cost of the hotel, you are reallying paying for that. If you go to the website for Marriott and search by country. Then find the Jarragua. You may be able to get to room for $84 USD per day plus tax. You may want to contact Marriott directly at their 800 telephone number. Although you will be spending big bucks, you will definatley have a nice hotel, room, pool, food, security, etc.

Now, here are the drawbacks - NO Guests back to your hotel room, Not the Cleanest Casino, VERY Expenisive to Eat, Drink. The Biggest Drawback is the Price!

Well, anyway..... enjoy yourself. I will be back in DR for the 6th time from 24 Aug - 3 Sep. I most likekly will be staying at the Maision Gautreaux.

Feel free to PM me for any questions. By the way, this formum DR1 is the BEST. No matter what the question you have, someone out there can provide you with an answer.

You might want to consider the Marriott Courtyard on Maximo Gomez. It has a small but clean pool and Thurs. - Sun. night, you can get a room for $79. per night. It is a beautiful hotel, quiet, free internet, breakfast dining area, and serves a evening menu in the lobby as well.

I would not recommend the Hispaniola Hotel. It was built in 1955 and retains much of it's old fixtures. I've stayed there several times and encountered all the problems mentioned with AC, leaking faucets, toilet problems, wet carpets, TVs that would not work, lamps not working, and phone problems. As another poster stated, this hotel has seen it's better days and needs to undergo a major renovation.

The Jaragua garden rooms are affordable and you should be able to book each night for about $84-85 with free breakfast. I have stayed there twice in the past 2 months. It does have a beautiful pool. Unless you are packing heavy with greenbacks, eating at the Jaragua is mainly for the well-heeled business class with expense accounts.

spend an extra 20 bucks and stay at the Marriott on Maximo gomes you will get free breakfast and can probably get a good rate through hotels.com
