Today I was looking at the commercial for the Ministry of Tourism La Republica Dominicana: Inagotable (HERE IS THE YOUTUBE LINK: YouTube - Republica Dominicana un pais inagotable ) and I noticed something that when I analyzed it bothered me. The video is very nice and well done. It shows the lively side of the DOminican Republic and all the good things our people have to offer. What bothered me was that at the end of the commercial the dominican girl (Protagonist) handed the caracol (represents country) to the foreign (very well American) girl. In my opinion the Dominican government is handing our country over to foreigners. Great examples of this is the DR-CAFTA, tourism (even tnought it is very good for our country there should be limits),as well as many other things. After seeing the videos I was wondering if anyone shared my opinion or am I thinking radically here.

Maybe she is not giving it away, but is sharing, and trusts the little girl not to crush it...

Think it is a well made piece of tourisim ad. Think OP might be reading too much into the symbolism. But then again, it's "in the eye of the beholder"

john

P.S. Thanks for the link. Last nite I had a meeting that had to do with the development of a web site business I am working on and this kind of subject matter and link came up. Will probably use it in the future.

What a wonderful ad. It's a smartly thought out gesture to give the seashell.
To me it means we (DR), has what you want. You'll find there all the things you enjoy having and doing.

Now, if they only had electricity 24/7 and swept the streets clean of garbage.........

Buscando turistas.....

Yes, you are reading too much into it.

It's a commercial targeting foreigners.

The little girl is sharing something with the tourists, in a way telling the tourist how nice Dominicans are.

Think about it, if the intended target are foreign tourists, is the girl supposed to give that caracol to a Dominican?. It doesn't make any sense.

How you came to the "The Dominican government is handing our country over to foreigners" conclusion is beyond me. I have watched that commercial hundreds of times and I got the message the very first time I saw it.

Very nice commercial with a very nice message.

"My country is beautiful, we are nice people, lets share my country".

Well when the Dominican girl hands the seashell to the foreign girl one conclude that she is giving the country because of all the nice experiences she gets when she has it in her ears. I am not trying to attack this government (eventhough I do not like it) they are all the same trying to convince others to come into the country and do what they wish.

I've seen this same general theme in many, many tourism commercials for many different places. Simply, it is a depiction of the warmth and generosity of the local people and that they want to share the abundance of whatever place the ad is promoting. And I agree with other posters in this thread: the OP is reading WAY TOO MUCH into his interpretation.

Indeed!.

I am yet to know of ONE person who doesn't like that commercial. I think I even have it recorded somewhere.

The OP is not reading too much into the interpretation, because its quite clear that the correct interpretation is that the DR is ready to share all its pleasures with the rest of the world.

On the contrary, the OP already had this notion that the DR is being given to foreigner prior to watching this advertisement and is now trying to impose such view into the ad.

Of course, only by ignoring the fact that the advertisement is a promotion for the Dominican tourism industry would anyone reach the conclusion the OP has reached, its way out of context.

John,
You're a day late and a dollar short. They're already selling it. Us native Floridians call it "goose grease." You know it as suntan lotion. LOL!!!!!

Darn it! (Had The Kid behaved properly, he wouldn't have missed the above gem)

But now that he's back, he'd like to know how Nal's inferred the OP's "notions" just based on that post. Possibly through PMs? If not, then please ejumacate us, Nals.

I liked that ad. I'd agree with the OP that there are issues around about exploitation of the DR by foreigners but I wouldn't place them as coming from that ad. which I thought was well done and nicely produced. I'd agree with posters who said the symbolism is about sharing not about handing over. It's also about caring - the older Dominican child going off to play with the younger foreign child. If anything, there wasn't enough about caring in the video............this was brought home to me so strongly last night when I stepped off a flight full of British tourists at Puerto Plata airport. I was feeling unbelievably happy to have finally got home. Tourists all go in line to pay visa fee and I didn't, being resident, so an immigration official told me to join the line with the others. I explained I was a returning resident and the seriousness of the man disappeared - beaming smile, 'oh you're one of us' he said as he escorted me to the booth marked 'returning Dominicans'. 'Welcome home, Do?a'. Reiterated by the booth personnel & the final passport checker. It felt that they were really happy I'd come home. Don't know how you capture that in a video but it sure left an impression on me! Particularly after the airport personnel at Gatwick, UK earlier in the day............

To piggy-back on Lambada's airport story, I had a sweet time once when flyingout of POP with cases of crafts to sell up north (to benefit a Dominican single-mother, not me)...anyway I adressed someone as "mi amor" and wow - they did NOT weigh my fat fat over-loaded cases, he found tape for me and double-triple taped everything, and then, like in a movie - he escorted me past a long line of folks waiting for customs and walked me all the way to the plane, saying to his co-workers as we went," here we have a friend, treat her well." I think he was touched that I had invested so much in the crafts and was trying to share a small part of the Dominican culture with the rest of the world, who knows.

I've never exported crafts before, but I have flown a good bit internationally and I have never been treated so well.

Just my two cents.

And to the OP - I think you see a link because you are swirling your theory in your head 24/7 (not a bad thing!), having obsessed similarly over injustices in the world, I can relate. We can read that into it if we wish - but most likley the video was NOT developed with that in mind.

Take care, Crafty Lady Sammy :)

um, the ad is in SPANISH ..so perhaps the target audience is mainly composed of South American and Spainiards or something?

perhaps NALs is at least somewhat right when he says the following?, ..

".. the OP already had this notion that the DR is being given to foreigner prior to watching this advertisement and is now trying to impose such view into the ad.
