Luggage security on the bus

I've traveled by Caribe tours before and it worked out fine, but I had some concern about suitcases stowed under the bus. There didn't seem to be any luggage check system (unlike SD's airport which seems much stricter about this than most airports) and lots of stops. There didn't seem to be anything stopping someone from taking a bag that didn't belong to them.

I'd never put anything in a stowed suitcase that I couldn't manage without, but it would be a considerable hassle. I've read of theft problems with bags in the overheads or left on the seats so I'd watch out for that. Any comments? Is the driver watching this more than it seems, perhaps a propina is in order?

One of my first Caribe Tours trips I met a German man, also on his way to Sosua. As we stopped in Puero Plata he advised me to look down at the luggage unloading, make sure my bag didn't leave.

I think the drivers have a general idea, but keep your valuables close by.
