Does anyone knows if GPS are functional in the DR. Just making sure before I buy one and taking it down to the Island.

Satellite should work... but I've not yet found any detailed road maps of DR for GPS. Without the basemap, what good is it?

If you are talking about the street level GPS?s, I would be interested in knowing of a good map for one. The Garmin maps shows the Dominican Republic but only extremely limited major highways, such as Route 1, 2, 5, 17, 18, 25, 45, 71, 73, etc. That?s about all (MapSource v8). Not very useful at all for driving directions.

No street level GPS in the DR, the only maps you can get are as SantiagoDR describes in the above post. I hear the marine maps of the DR coast line are pretty good. I have a Garmin 60CSx and it works just fine here.

Thanks for your answers. I like to use the GPS for land navigation, area calculation and altitude reading. Thanks again.

Hi there ....

No road maps but helped me once in a while to find the highway from moca to cabarete, tricky way. Area calculation etc. just great, meassured a couple of properties and helped me to mark in the PC where our water pipes are going on the property.

Google Earth now works with GPS (although I haven't tried it yet). Sure, you need a laptop and G3 internet (Centennial offers it). Not really practical for driving. But for land search and such it may be adaptable(?).
