Lower those airport charges
Airport Department Director Andres Vanderhorst says that the DR is the country that charges the most airport charges and government taxes among all international airports.

....... and for a round trip example:

Santiago to Miami

$149.00 Fare
$150.80 in Taxes and other charges

Miami to Baltimore

$146.00 Fare
$20.80 in taxes and other charges

In all fairness, I flew into both Puerto Plata and Santiago airports 15 or so years ago. The new airports are a dream in comparison. Also, no more middle of the night rides to Santiago from the airport in Pto Plata or the capital.

I don't know at what point they're paid for (as I'm sure only some of this money goes to the airports, and then much of that would go to employees, electricity, maintenance, etc).

I don't know about Pto Plata, but Santiago airport was also built with private funds and the owners deserve a fair return on their investment which has done a lot for the travelling public and to help businesses prosper in the Cibao region.

SantiagoDR,
No, I'm not thrilled to pay those high fees.
A comparison of domestic travel & int'l travel add-on charges is perhaps not fair as I suspect running immigration and customs on both ends is part of the DR travel fee structure.

EWR-MAD (Newark, NJ to Madrid, Spain)
1 Adults (age 18 to 64) $576.00
Additional Taxes/Fees $66.00
Total Price $642.00

EWR-SDQ (Newark, NJ to Santo Domingo)
1 Adults (age 18 to 64) $208.00
Additional Taxes/Fees $127.00
Total Price $335.00

Darn near twice the taxes/fees.

I know what ya mean! Yes the taxes for DR flights are high and scary, but the country is poor and needs that revenue to keep the airports running safely. I for one understand why the taxes are high and have no problem as long as the air safety is a improved within the DR.

Some things - ya just gotta pay for....... :tired:

Roundtrip tickets from San Juan to Santo Domingo (40 minutes each way) are now at $350.80 on American Airlines. $96.80 are taxes! In November, they go up to $450.80 and for December who knows what the price will be! That's why I will be seeing less and less of my wife's country.

No way!

This to rubio_higuey:
It's not as easy as jumping on the ferry. The ferry leaves from Mayaguez which is a 3 hour drive from San Juan where we live. The ferry leaves late at night in order to arrive in the morning at Santo Domingo. This is like a 10 hour trip in itself. On returning, the ferry leaves late at night from Santo Domingo in order to arrive in the morning at Mayaguez. This is to be followed by a 3 hour trip back to San Juan. All this is without taking a car with you to Santo Domingo. If you take your car, add several more hours in line in Mayaguez and in Santo Domingo, both back and forth while the authorities check for the correct licences, insurance documents, illegal drugs, etc. If we were going to the DR for a month or so, we could consider the ferry, but for long weekends too much time is lost. It used to be we would get on a plane without a second thought and be in SD in 40 minutes! However, with the rising costs and taxing of air travel we can not go as often as we did previously.

I have to disagree with you. Just because a country is poor does not give them the right to charge high fees. The revenues would probably increase if the prices came down. More touristist would go to the DR,believing they were getting a bargain price for a vacation. The high taxes are just greed and corruption.

Pet Tax

Can you believe this one....I just confirmed my reservation in which I am taking my dog with me back to the USA and the ticket price was always 100 USD for a checked pet that is too large for the cabin and now there is a $16.00 tax added on to that.. $116.00 now instead of $100.00..............

Figure the cost of your total stay/vacation/visit to the DR. Compare that to a trip to anywhere else in the caribbean.....or other leisure destinations. Wait to get your credit card bill. Then write back and tell us please how it worked out. Was it a worthwhile expenditure of your hard-earned cash or will you choose another destination next time?
Plz figure in all costs including entertainment, food, accommodations, transport, extra side trips, etc. Just curious.
I'm working on my thesis/disertation and need this info to graduate. From what I'm not sure yet, but would be helpful info.

Fewer ex-pat Dominicans visiting

http://www.dominicantoday.com/app/article.aspx?id=25454:bunny: TAX

Santo Domingo.- The number of expatriate Dominicans visiting the country during the January-August period this year saw a reduction of 25,2501 compared to the same period in 2006.

According to figures from the Tourist Flow Report published by the Dominican Republic Central Bank, 387,464 non-resident Dominicans arrived in the country by air, compared to 412,965 who visited the country in the first eight months of 2006, a reduction of 6.18%.

The decline is attributed to more expensive airfares, 30 and 35% of which is tax, according to the president of the Dominican Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Adavit), Jochi Mella.

Consider that a charter flight from toronto to Cuba would only have 210 in taxes. Why is there an extra 100 for the DR? They have a $10 Tourist card included too.

I used miles for my trip for two from nyc in november. san juan - $10 for 2 people. Santiago (closest to north coast jet blue flies) - 184.00 for 2 people (plus round trip transport costs). Still coming to DR because I feel it will be overall cheaper, and more fun.

I agree with jruane44 --something is amiss when the D.R. is higher than every other country out there. You can bet that they are price gouging on airport taxes because of corrupt politicians.

Apples to Apples Comparison

A comparison of domestic travel & int'l travel add-on charges is perhaps not fair as I suspect running immigration and customs on both ends is part of the DR travel fee structure.

Today?s Round Trip Costs per Person (Leaving Oct 9 / Returning Dec 8)

Miami to Santiago, Dominican Republic Round Trip:

$189.00 Fare
$127.00 Taxes

$316.00 Total

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Miami to Montego Bay, Jamaica Round Trip
$167.00 Fare
$87.20 Taxes

$254.20 Total

A couple going on vacation would save $123.60 by going to Jamaica
instead of going to the Dominican Republic on airfare alone.
