I took some pictures of some light eyes Dominicanas for you- posted on the media Gallery under my albums. I saw many more green, gray, hazel., and blue eyed Dominicans but only took a couple of pictures of people I know personally, so I know they aren't contacts.

The one thing that amazes me is how a person can genetically appear almost pure negroid but have blue or green eyes when brown eyes are supposed to genetically predominate. I had an interesting vacation at least from my point of view, It might have been a little boring for many of the posters. I visited the graveyard with my wife where she got me to take pictures of about 100 grave markers, went to the city hall and took photo of every page recoding the names of the dead, ages and causes of death from 1920-1966 in Jarabacoa. Visited a number of very old people, several 100 plus years old. Had a long interesting talk with a Dr Jose Jimenez, the designer of the Jarabacoa Heraldic crest and a Spanish and British trained Doctor. Attended a Baptism in the mountains, very interesting for a non practising person. Very humble religious folks that can really sing. Walked by a house just as a young teenagers had an epileptic fit( still needs test to confirm) All the idiots at the house were drunk and didn't have a clue what to do. I put her in the recovery position while my wife phoned a taxi. Within five minutes we had the girl in a 24 hour medical clinic(private) with immediate attention from a doctor. Mom and Dad live in Santo Domingo and the girl was just visiting for the holidays. Thankfully she seems to be OK. More later.

I find this phenomenon begs for more research. I met an older an in Samana, a friend's dad, who was pitch black - with pale blue eyes. All his 7 kids had brown or black eyes. None of his grandchildren - to date - inherited "colored" eyes.

They told me that it was a genetic mutation, like being an albino, except that only his eyes were albino. I did see two albinos in the near villages - in walking distance.

Someone who knows more than we do can surely chime in. Perhaps on another thread if I have upset the OP. After all, it is adressed to one person only.

No offense, The Berzin reference is from an earlier post where he stated that the only Dominicans with eye colours other than brown or black must be wearing coloured contacts. My wife and mother-in-law tell me that in the area around Jarabacoa, back when the population was only around 3000 the majority of people were white. Many of these white gentlemen were typical Dominicans producing many children with different women out of wedlock(strange word isn't it) This, I believe is the reason for the darker skin people with light eyes.

Dear Bob, Thank you for letting me join in!

I have read an additional theory. As you may know, Samana was settled partly by freed blacks from Philadelphia. Some of them surely had blue-eyed ancestors in the USA, shall we say. And I can see that recessive gene coing down the pike if two carrying it were to shall we say, "hook up and cook up." bad joke.

I find it interesting and none of the theories offered to date really put my mind at rest. There must be more to it. Any gene theory specialists out there in Punta Cana want to chime in from your pool lounge chairs? :)

Where is Mirador when a gal needs im?

What is going on is that a recessive gene, in this case light colored eyes, is matching up from the contribution from the mother and the father. Since many if not most Dominicans have some European blood, most of them will have this gene, hence the population will have some people with this trait. Color has nothing to do with this, that is why you see a significant number of dark people with light eyes.
