I was at this resort almost 5 years ago so my information is VERY dated.

The beach inside the resort was gorgeous.

There was no real nightlife outside the resort unless you took a taxi about 25 minutes in La Romana.

There was a computer center but it was expensive by comparison to every other internet cafe I have visited since in the DR. Don't know about wifi I didnt bring a laptop.

There was one small road with shops and 2 restaurants on this road just outside the resort. The food in the restaurants was FAR superior to the resort.

The resort food seemed adequate on day 1 and even day 2. By day 3 it seemed like the same stuff everyday. Lobster was extra if you wanted it for dinner.

The restaurants inside the resort required advanced notice if you wanted to eat there even though when we walked inside the places were empty. We never did get to try any of the restaurants but they looked nice inside.

The grounds were VERY well maintained and the rooms were good for 1 couple per room. You wouldn't want any more than 1 couple in any room.

The reason I was at this resort was because we used RCI points.

If you fly into SDQ expect a LONG taxi ride to the resort. (close to 2 hrs).

Not to put the place down but I prefer being amongst Dominicans and not a bunch of tourists so I would not stay there again.

We were there last June

PM for a link of pics and videos.
In answer to your questions:
1) are there any free wifi in the hotel/beach?

If you sign for Whyndham by request (is free) on their website u get special treatment,,, like bookig ur a la carte dinners together for up to 4 days in advance, bottle of wine when u get in and robes. U also get free internet usage tickets,,, but there is no wi-fi, at least when we were there.

2) is there any really nice nightlife nearby?

No Dominican-style nigth life,,, there are about 3 other hotels in the area with the same style disco as the whyndham and few other bars right outside the hotel, but the animation team works really hard to keep u busy.

On Saturdays they have a WHITE party at the beach,,, make sure to bring something realy comfy in white, drinks and music is by the beach side on the sand.

Be prepared to walk,, two resorts together Place and Beach,,,,, the shows are at the Beach and the disco at the Palace.

3) any good DR food nearby? (hate to go to DR for italian food)

Sad to say the best food they have is at the Italian restaurant,,, but their buffet is not bad,,,, you can enjoy Dominican food two nights because one night they have it at the Beach and another night at the Palace.

They have a great grill but that is on the beach side aaaaaawwwwaaaayyyy from everything. We had lunches there most of the time.

Hope u have a good time,,,,, we did, don't miss the Catalinita or Saona trip.

On the weekend the Beach side will be packed with Dominicans so it feels rreeeeaaalllly busy,,, but there is tons of beach chairs. Also there is a nice tranquil pool between the two hotels and it has a bar which is never busy.

We will be there again probably in March,,, it was perfect for us,,, a combination of everything specially having many choices of food and ambiance.

Good luck

I was at the hotel in September. I have my pictures posted at Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach and Palace, September 2007 pictures, photos, and videos, from caribbean on webshots

"Nice" nightlife is in the eye of the beholder but there are a number of clubs to check out in the area. You can also spend some time at the new Casino Dominicus which is accessible by quick and easy shuttle, open from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. They have a disco area with dance floor which looks really great, but like all of the Dominican nightlife, it doesn't get started til quite late. Currently the only parts of the casino that are open are the games and the sports bar (and disco), but a fine dining restaurant and commercial centre with shopping are set to open in February.

Walking distance away is the disco at the Eden hotel in Dominicus. I was there on a Thursday night, "National and International Night", and once it got rolling it was a lot of fun. There is also the Star Club 10 minutes away on the road to Bayahibe. In Bayahibe you can look into the Mundo Aquatico Disco and Big Sur on the weekend. Mundo is small and dull when empty, so again make sure you go later. Big Sur is not about decoration but is cool since it's outdoors. A cab driver can get you to all of the options further than walking distance.

I can't help you with Dominican food in Dominicus, but you can check out any of the many Pico Pollo outfits and get many of the staples, like excellent fried chicken and plantain. There is a great place beside the Mundo Aquatico that offers a few other options as well, like meats in sauces, done take out style. Along the water you can check out the Bahia and Barco restaurants. Beautiful locations on the beach, particularly at sunset. I have pictures of them being loaded from my stay in Bayahibe last week.

CB,
I am so glad to hear that you had a good time there. I think that it is an easy place to relax at. If you do your advance planning about the dinner thing the resturants are very nice, we actually did all of them last time. the spanish one is very quiet, so small but really pretty and that grill was really nice and Mexican was fun too. The thing to remeber is that the place is run by italians and frequented by italians so you are going to find italian food....

The public beach up the road has some resturants and you can have bandera there if you tire of resort food.

There is a bus that goes to LaRomana or Bayahibe right outside the resort by the Eden.

To the Op make sure that you post after your trip so we can read about it.
