The aftermath - specially for Cap Cana, but also DR as a whole, should be very wonderful too.

worth millions

You're right. It's one thing to talk a big game but it's another to have. When millions of people watch this I (think) it takes on a whole life of it's own. Can you imagine the millions$$$$$$$$$$$ it's worth in PR for the DR??

Nothing but good can come of this. Cap Cana has done an excellent job in promoting their development and Punta Cana as a destination. Hats off to them!

..and it may well become a yearly/permanent feature in the PGA Championship Tour schedule, ..

ESPNdeportes.com - Cap Cana tendr? un torneo de leyendas en abril

For the first time the world’s best players of the PGA Tour of Champions –which is more than 50 years old- will make a stop in Dominican Republic, in one of three courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, another Masters champion, who will be there to oversee the match, ninth in the 2008 calendar.

Germany’s Bernhard Langer, the Scot Sandy Lyle, the Welshman Ian Woosnam and the Americans Tom Watson and Craig Stadler, Fred Funk, Jay Haas, Tom Kite, Nick Price, are the Augusta winners who have confirmed their presence, though the list also includes great golfers such as Spain’s Jose Maria Ca?izares and Juan Quir?s, and Argentina’s Eduardo Romero and Vicente Fernandez, said Phil Staubaugh, Public Relations manager of the PGA Tour by telephone from Augusta.

"We want this match to become a classic, the Classic of Cap Cana,” said Ellis Perez, vice president for Institutional Relations, during the competition’s presentation held today in Madrid.

The match will continue for two more years in Cap Cana, which has signed an option for another two, the promoters said, adding that 78 golfers will play 54 holes for the US$2 million dollar purse, with US$300,000 for the champion.

Pebble Beach, watch out! :cheeky:

This will certainly attract new golf enthusiasts to the country and, of course, having the largest number of golf courses in the entire Caribbean will certainly help in quenching whatever new golf-vacation demand might arise.

Folks, let the good times roll... at least in Punta Cana. ;)

Fulton Allem interview

Fulton Allem, the South African golf legend, who led the championship in its start, commented on the course and tournament.

He mentioned that the greens were watered down and tees were moved up to slow it down, compared to the Pro Am yesterday.

He called 17, 13, 18 and No. 3 "very tough holes." But elsewise, he said that the course played very fairly. "This is paradise, it doesn't get any better," he said.

He explained that he had bad shots, and needed an eagle and five birdies to make it up.

Commenting on the wind conditions, he said they were nothing out of the usual for spring time. "It's the gusts that are bad; you can hit a perfect shot that will make you look stupid," He said it takes a different kind of player to play well in the wind.

Commenting on an observation by Papo Velez of Puerto Rico's TV Show Golf Spot for a Lifetime, Allem mentioned that the green at hole No. 13, par 3 "would be perfect if it was the other way around." Allem said, "Jack likes to make it difficult."

Velez, in turn suggested that it be changed and built up right after the green, where good shots start rolling. "The green is not fair, wont reward a good shot."

Allem took time to explain the reason why South Africa is tops in golf in the world. "We have great teachers and golf schools that teach the game, not just how to play.

Jack Nicklaus interview

Said one designs a course for the best of conditions, and when there are extreme conditions players have to meet the challenges.

Said that while Pete Dye was the first to bring people to play here [Teeth of the Dog in Casa de Campo] with the opening of "other resorts, the Dominican Republic is obviously on teh way to be a big destination for golf."

"I am very proud that any of my golf courses receive recognition, or host a major event."

Admitted that the game of golf in the US is not growing statistically. But said that abroad it is growing. He said there are many countries, especially in the Eastern Block, where golf courses are being built for the first time. Mentioned that met with Mayor of Moscow, who is interested in building 15 public golf courses in Moscow "to do with golf what they did with tennis." He said that building in Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus (45 countries), all throughout areas where the game of golf had not been played.

Regarding the US, he explained that while statistically it is not growing in numbers of players, it is not declining either. He explained that one of the reasons is that golf has not attracted as many young players, and parents and grandparents are spending more time with their kids in soccer, baseball, tennis, and other sports rather than playing golf.

But he said they are building 60 golf courses in the US, "somebody is going to have to play them."

Commented that while all tennis courts are the same, there are no two golf courses the same, making it an attraction to play golf.

"We design around the average golfer, you accommodate senior players with shorter tees, ladies with forward tees, then you don't accommodate, throw them back 100 yards and let them go at it."

Commenting on Cap Cana courses he explained that the most costly development land is at the ocean, and Punta Espada has 8 holes on the golf course. The 2nd course, Las Iguanas will have 4 holes on the ocean, and the unnamed third will be back against the cliff. "It is the investment of land and property. The investment in the golf course is small, in relation to the totality of the project. The golf course is the leading amenity here, you must do it right, and then the return will come with the marinas, the hotels and the real estate and everything else."

He explained that at this time in his career, his leading motivation is to take the game to grow in new countries, in the DR, Anguilla, Tortola and St. Lucia in the Caribbean. "Frankly, as a motivation, I enjoy being able to create. It is fun. It is something when you go forward 50 years from now, and people may say, "Nicklaus was very prolific after he got done with playing golf, left a lot of nice facilities. I enjoy contributing to the game of golf, a game that gave me so much."

Nevertheless, he admitted that none of his 21 grand children play golf, despite several being very good athletes. He says he spends lots of time with his grandchildren.

His motivation is that "my legacy, my business or my name carries beyond my lifetime."

Mark Weibe interview

By early afternoon, Mark Weibe was the leader. He commented it had been a tough day, that he was missing the ball in the right spaces. He mentioned that the "wind was the main contender." Mentioned that all day he was wondering what selection of clubs after visualizing the trajectory of the ball. At the end, he was tired of the continued thought of figuring how to beat the wind. "Can't wait to have a Presidente!"
