.. for winter weekend next Jan/Feb. We're a mixed group of fifteen or so 30-40-somethings looking for someplace nice, but not necessarily 5-star. MUST have access to a great pool/beach scene, short walking distance to a casino and enough bars/restaurants at night to make things interesting. I've heard good things about Puerto Plata, but one guide book says it rains too much there in the winter. True?

I'm also intrigued by what I read about Sosua and Cabarate. But do they have casinos? Also, Punta Cana is entirely all-inclusive, big-deal resorts? We need a place that has some options.

Fifteen 30-40 yr olds to Puerto Plata, Sosua, or Cabarete...

I'd recommend Cabarete. (I usually do)

If you choose hotels/condos on the bay, the beach/bars/restaurants are right at your doorstep. You can walk to them all.

Casino is just on the eastern edge of town & you can walk there, but for a short part of the distance there is poor lighting and no sidewalk. However, to be honest, I'd take a taxi or moto. I would not make a habit of walking to or from any casino. Not that I've heard of problems, but the thought of a group of people perceived to have money on them walking to/from a casino just isn't something I'd recommend.

AND...
Nice hotel to consider
Cabarete Hotel Dominican Republic, VILLA TAINA HOTEL

Also, look at condos. Very often 2 or 3 couples (or several friends) can get a 2/3 bedroom condo that's more comfortable than the cost of a hotel room per person.
Look at
Hotel Cabarete Palm Beach Condos and Studios
or
Ocean Dream | Harmony - Luxury condos for rent in the center of Cabarete, Dominican Republic - better than a villa!
or
Velero Beach Resort; Dominican Republic Luxury Vacation Resort Hotel & Condo Rentals

If those aren't in budget...
Look to these more basic options in center of town, but not on the beach.
Hotel Cabarete Dominican Republic : Cita del Sol, Cabarete Dominican Republic, R?publique Dominicaine, Dominikanische Republik, Republica Dominicana
or
Cabarete hotel Dominican Republic–Puerto Plata - Cabarete windsurfing and kitesurfing

Good luck & enjoy your vacation wherever you finally end up!

I live in Sosua and the good thing is that you can walk everywhere.

There are two Casino's either end of the town. The new Casino at Sosua Bay Hotel is not yet opened. Only the Disco is opened. The Casino at Playa Chicquita has a disco and the Casino is open.

There are plenty of bars & restaurants. Also Clubs for dancing ... Latino and Classico with a mix of music.

The main hotels here are Casa Marina Reef and Sosua Bay Hotel. You can also find smaller hotels or private apartments for rent.

Let me know if you need more info.

Hope you enjoy your stay.
